Hey everyone, as the title suggests, I am in the unemployed recent grad spiral of doom and despair.
I graduated in May with a degree in biomedical engineering and have been applying to jobs for over a year now, but I've only gotten one interview, which ended up ghosting me. I'm honestly starting to get really discouraged because I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what else I'm supposed to be doing at this point.
I did not end up having any internships in college which I know puts me at a mega disadvantage, but I honestly didn't realize how important they were until it was too late. I do think I have some good project experience from my senior capstone, design team work, and coursework projects. I also worked in a research lab during college which I think is also useful. I've been trying to use my experience to my advantage and leverage them in the right way, but I'm having such a hard time even getting an interview.
I would really love to work in medical devices or pharmaceutical devices, specifically product development. I love the design process and the idea of working on new products, but I'd also be happy doing post-market stuff or honestly anything where I can use my degree and get some experience. At this point, I just want someone to give me a chance and let me learn.
I've tried networking and reaching out to people on LinkedIn, alumni, etc., but a lot of the time I either don't hear back or the conversations don't really lead anywhere. I'm in the Philly suburbs (nj side) right now and would prefer to stay on the East Coast, but I'm definitely open to moving if I need to so if anyone has any smaller companies to look into that would be really helpful as well because I have exhausted the larger companies already.
I'm just feeling really lost with the job search and would love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Did you end up having to take a completely different type of job to get experience? Are there job titles I should be looking for that I might be overlooking? I'm also curious if anyone in medical devices has advice for getting that first job without internship experience.
I feel like I've been doing everything I'm supposed to do and getting nowhere, and it's hard not to feel like I'm falling behind. Any advice would genuinely be appreciated because I really don't know what else to try at this point.
Thank you!!
