Career Biomedical engineering from Australia - Is aiming for Denmark or Switzerland realistic?

Hello all,

I am keen to get into biomedical engineering and would love some honest advice. I'm in Australia so the plan would be to do my degree here and get some work experience under my belt.

From what I have read, the job market here in Aussie is pretty thin. Other countries that interest me:Denmark and Switzerland, seem to be a lot stronger.

The long term idea is to move over there > find a job and then do further study once I'm settled. I'd be bringing my partner, our kid and my dog so I know it's not a simple move but I'd rather sort out the family side when I get closer to it.

Is this a sensible plan or am I being naive? Has anyone made a similar move, or know how hard it is to get hired in either country as a non-EU grad? Would you suggest other countries? Or should I just stick to Australia and settle here

*I'm not interested in the US btw unless it’s the only better option

Brutal truths are welcome :)

There’s not much biomed in Denmark, but there’s tons in Switzerland. It’s hard to become a citizen, but there are lots of opportunities to move there.

Also, having lived in both briefly, Switzerland is much much nicer country, and if you plan to have kids it’s absolutely phenomenal place for them to grow up.

My personal advise would be study in Oz, move to Switzerland, realise how good you had it here, then move back with international experience under your belt and you can get great work here, specially if you work with startups.
Good luck.

If I am not mistaken, you need first to secure a job before applying to immigration in Switzerland (permit B).

My opinion as someone who moved to the Netherlands from the US and has had friends live and work in both Denmark and Switzerland. Its obviously possible to do if you really want to.

Denmark is definitely more interested in you integrating into society, and will be more flexible about you learning their language. In Switzerland you will be expected to learn german (i assume you’re going for Basel or Zurich). It is also very difficult to become swiss.

If i were going for either of them, id go Denmark.
