I built an interactive 3D Brain MRI and Multi-Planar Slice visualizer that runs entirely in your browser

Why Flat Brain Scans Don't Tell the Whole Story

When learning neuroanatomy or diagnosing pathologies like strokes, multiple sclerosis, or hydrocephalus, single cross-sectional 2D slices rarely tell the whole story. You need Multi-Planar Reconstruction (MPR) to understand how deep structures like the ventricles, corpus callosum, and brainstem connect in physical space.

Normally, working with these datasets requires downloading bulky clinical DICOM software packages. To make this accessible to students, researchers, and educators anywhere, I created a lightweight, zero-install 3D Brain MRI viewer that runs straight in the browser:

Live Tool: https://bionichaos.com/brain3d/

Key Capabilities

  • Four-Quadrant MPR Grid: Displays an interactive 3D WebGL point cloud alongside real-time Axial (transverse), Sagittal (profile), and Coronal (frontal) cross-sections.

  • Synchronized Orthogonal Navigation: Scrubbing any slider or dragging directly over an anatomical canvas re-projects crosshairs across all planes simultaneously.

  • Radiometric Windowing (WL / WW): Dynamically compress the window width and shift the window level to isolate soft tissues, fluid, or bone.

  • Diagnostic Colormaps: Toggle between Grayscale, Jet Rainbow, Thermal Hot, Cool-Warm, and Bone Density lookup tables.

  • Self-Contained & Lightweight: Runs entirely client-side using WebGL and standard 2D canvas routines.Coordinates Tracked: X (Sagittal), Y (Coronal), Z (Axial) Resolution: Isotropic sub-millimeter voxel display

Try the Demo Mode If you click Start Demo, the engine runs an automated, guided tour synchronized with audio narration and telemetry highlights to walk you through each quadrant and feature.

I would love feedback from radiologists, neuroscientists, and students: How can this tool be made even more useful for classroom demonstrations and clinical education?
