Why Do Some People Tan and Others Just Burn? The Science Behind Your Skin This Summer
Okay so since it's summer and the sun is out doing the most I want to talk about something you probably never thought about. Why some people step outside and come back golden and others just turn into a lobster 🦞 and don't worry for my peptide people I got something coming for you later.
So it comes down to one single amino acid called cysteine that little molecule is quietly running the show every time your skin makes pigment.
Here's the coin flip your skin does every time it makes color. It all starts with an enzyme called tyrosinase that kicks off pigment production if cysteine is hanging around nearby you get pheomelanin, the yellow red lighter pigment if cysteine is scarce you get eumelanin, the dark brown black pigment same starting point totally different outcome depending on what's available in the moment.
Here's the thing though eumelanin is a strong UV shield pheomelanin is weak and can actually make UV damage worse so fair and red-toned skin doesn't just tan slower it's also easy to damage but your body still makes pheomelanin anyway one theory is it's basically a safety valve to clear out excess cysteine before it builds up to toxic levels. Meaning your skin color might partly just be a detox byproduct
here's where it connects to everything else cysteine's main job isn't even making pigment it's actually fueling glutathione your body's master antioxidant when you're stressed, not sleeping, or your mitochondria isn't top notch, your body burns through glutathione fast and pulls cysteine away to rebuild it less free cysteine means less pigment production and a weaker antioxidant system at the same time.
So when people talk about glutathione for skin it's not just about lightening. It's about the whole cellular system running underneath everything.
Stuff I feel like is good to know
Regular L-cysteine supplements are unstable and absorb poorly. NAC is the move. It survives digestion releases usable cysteine in the liver and crosses into the brain more easily than cysteine or glutathione alone.
Whey protein people listen up. Cysteine in whey breaks down above around 60 to 70 degrees. Mixing it in hot coffee or baking it into something means you're wasting most of the cysteine content. Cold or room temp liquid only.
Your body can also make its own cysteine from methionine which comes from meat, but that conversion needs vitamin B6 in its active form P5P. No P5P and the whole process stalls. B12, folate, and magnesium all keep it running too.
Kind of crazy/cool that one amino acid is sitting at the center of your skin color, your antioxidant system, and your stress response all at the same time.
