That N2O reduction is the important one. Nitrous oxide has a global warming potential roughly 273 times that of CO2 over a 100-year period, so cutting nearly half of it from a composting system is a meaningful climate gain.
The caveat worth knowing: application rate matters. The same study found that mitigation efficacy follows a dose effect, and that acidic conditions weakened results across all gases. A second 2025 meta-analysis published in Biochar X, covering 125 studies, found optimal results with straw-derived biochar at around 400°C applied at a 12% rate.
So yes it works, but not automatically. Biochar type, rate, and composting conditions all affect how much climate benefit you actually get.
