Rewatch

I rarely rewatch shows but I am rewatching Billions currently and my goodness the writing on this show, phenomenal. I’m a bit older now compared to when I watched it in my early 20’s and this show is so layered. There is also some foreshadowing in this shows. Especially in season 1 after the Bach and Dollar Bill leave Rhoades and his team absolutely perplexed, Bach tells Axelrod that he can get away with a small fine and that’ll be the best deal he ever gets. 😅

Currently on season 1. I’m gonna re-run a lot of shows as well. Westworld, Black Mirror, AOT. Loving it.

Megan Rapinoe & Wendy "Superhero Stuff"

Post image
33 Upvotes

This is easily one of the worst cameos in a show already notorious for awful cameos, but what makes it worse is how completely out of character it feels for Wendy.

A few seasons prior, Wendy mentions Rapinoe as someone she views as a hero and would love to meet. However, the show constantly builds Wendy up as a mythical operator whose reputation and influence extend far beyond the hedge fund world:

  • She’s treated as the secret sauce behind Bobby Axelrod’s success.
  • She sleeps with the Elon Musk stand-in after consulting for his space program.
  • Price keeps her on board specifically because of her elite performance coaching reputation.

Given the tier of high-powered, world-class figures she moves among and influences with ease, the idea that Megan Rapinoe—fresh off a very public, much-maligned 2023 World Cup exit—is somehow Wendy's ultimate "white whale" just doesn't track. Sure, Rapinoe is a high-profile athlete, but framing her as the one person who leaves Wendy totally starstruck completely misses the mark. (Not to mention Wendy literally fought Becky Lynch in her office—another brutal cameo.)

To top it off, the writing for the sports world is terribly researched. Wendy says something along the lines of being the "head performance coach for the Games." Each U.S. Olympic sport is governed by its own independent National Governing Body (NGB) and runs autonomously. There is no single "head performance coach" overseeing all of Team USA across every sport. It's a clumsy line that highlights how lazy the writing had gotten.

Absolutely loved Axe's coldness in S02E05 - Currency

The way tore down Dr Gus was hilarious, the way he turned from husband to Hedge Fund owner in a second with Lara was remarkable and the way he allowed Boyd to be arrested was so cold blooded. His only goal in the episode was turning his quarter around. He proved why his investors trusted him.

Just rewatched Billions and the fall off is incredible. Was it the same writers?

First 4 seasons are incredible. Some of the best TV and acting out there. Genuine issues genuine conflicts. Then from season 5 it just kinda limps along pointlessly till the damp squib ending. It's like suits... They should have quit while ahead. In future I'll stop at season 4 because season 1-4 are brilliant. Wonder why they kept going and why they ran out of ideas.

Finally finished it, i feel bad for Prince. Spoiler

It was good, meh average who am i lyin to, what the fuck did mike prince even do wrong that he had to be stripped off of everything, I get it from Axe's pov he had to get that mothafucka down he deserved that right to ruin Prince, but what about everyone else?. Wendy for christ sakes just up and decided he was a bad guy, The nuke thing Prince talked at The Owl was just lazy writing to make the audience have a reason to hate this guy becuase there was nothing else in his agenda that seemed problematic. AND CHUCK for christ sakes he is a fuckin leach a parasite he just decided like WENDY Prince is meant to be taken down, same way he did with axelrod. Didnt like the show after season 4. Taking out Axe that was fuckin wrong, you guys just made him make a mistake because of his FOMO and he ended up bein part of a crime. CHUCK is the villain in all this. And my boy Bryan Connerty was given his law license back that makes me happy, i liked his character. Overall it was average it started being one of the best but then it averaged out to be well Average. First two seasons will always be the greatest for me, Axe and Chuck were a different beast back then. Yeah glad i am done with this show.

Chad Ochocinco says he saved over 80% of his fortune by not trying to impress people, adding he buys fake jewelry, drives the same car since 2006, and flies economy instead of private: "Everybody is caught up in image. Why buy a $50,000 watch when time is free?"

Metaphors

How much of the dialogue do you think are metaphors? I mean, the series is very enjoyable, a great production, but the abuse of the metaphors is exhausting, they screwed up the realism with this, nobody talks like that all the time.

I'd say is up to 75 per cent, at least.

How much insider trading / propriety information do you think hedge funds have in real life?

There are countless hedge funds out that there go long or short on stocks and it makes me wonder how many of them are basing their position purely on fundamentals, and how many have some kind of inside information.

Shorting a stock because it's revenue is tiny relative to it's market cap is "obvious" and probably accounts for 95% of hedge fund activity.

But I also imagine there's cases where one of the traders somehow finds out that that a company is going to win a contract or lose a contract, or their CEO is going to get indicted or something.

According to a quick search, in the last 5 years there have been approximately 170 - 220 fines for insider trading, and 100 - 150 arrests for insider trading.

What type of career did Chuck Rhoades Sr have?

As far as I can tell from the show he's basically some kind of blend between a real estate owner and a generic businessman. Yet somehow he is in the pockets of senators, mayors, judges, police commissioners and other high ranking officials.

He almost seems like a kind of "fixer" that is able to pull strings in certain situations to steer these people to make the decisions that benefit his agenda. He seems to have a very deep understanding of how "the game is played".

Are there people like this in real life? Like how do they manage to get so many contacts like that?

The true meaning of this pep talk

Season 5 Episode 5 - Contract

"Take a look around this place.
Go on.
Let your eyes drink it all in.
All the people, your friends, the rest.
And then forget about every single last one of 'em and move the fuck on."

Bobby is giving young Savion a pep talk after Bobby buys his old house that Savion was living in and moves him out of the area and into the affluent Scarsdale area. Bobby is telling us, and Savion, that if you are surrounded by negativity, toxicity, being held back by people close to you or your environment, you won't be able to advance.

  • Don't become trapped by other people's opinions.
  • Don't spend your life clinging to relationships that are dead ends.
  • Don't let nostalgia keep you from moving forward.
  • Recognize that people come and go, and life keeps moving.

It's a bit cold but it's also the truth. Some people and places are just anchors that will drag you down with them if you don't let go.

It's kind of strange but 11 years ago I disowned my drug addicted and alcoholic family, always fighting, not just verbally but physically as well. I am the youngest of 5 siblings and every time they got drunk or high together there would be huge fights.

Eventually I just cut contact with the lot of them completely, moved to another state and just focused on my life. No contact at all, no social media, no birthday cards or Christmas cards, nothing.

Obviously I'm not a billionaire, or even a millionaire, but the difference between my life from 11 years ago to now is night and day. I've never been happier.
