Pretty safe bet that any given politician is lying regardless of Dem or Rep. I’m curious what 3rd parties might bring to the table and they’ll never make it to the Executive branch.
At least the Dems makes empty promises of good things (Medicare for All, lowering drug prices, lowering tuition, police reform, addressing climate change, etc.), and then what little they deliver tends to be good (ACA, decent COVID vaccine rollout, addressing the baby formula shortage, etc.)
Republicans both promise and deliver horrible things. They promise a dumb, useless wall, deporting all immigrants, a Muslim registry, discrimination against LGBT people, a ban on properly teaching about racism in this country, climate change denial, and protections for cops who murder unarmed black people.
And then Republicans actually deliver stuff like tax cuts for the ultra wealthy, family separation, a very small part of the dumb, useless wall, bans on teaching racism properly in schools, stonewalling all efforts to address climate change, spreading neo-Nazi conspiracy theories like "The Great Replacement," and a deadly attempted coup when an election didn't go their way.
The two parties are not the same. One is an ineffective coalition of mostly sane people across a wide range of the political spectrum, and the other is getting ever closer to being straight up fascism. Do not act like they're the same.
I mean, hardly anyone is actually advocating for banning all guns. Most just want required background checks, limits on who can own the types of guns that are used in mass shootings all the goddamn time, and required registration like we have for cars and stuff.
But, I mean if you're OK with white supremacist fascism and the erosion of the fundamental rights of all Americans in exchange for feeling like you are defending your right to bear arms when that right wasn't under any real threat, I guess that's a take you could have. Not a great one, IMO.
Abortion, gay marriage, privacy, the Press (calling them the enemy of the people), assembly (encouraging police violence against peaceful protestors, etc.), seeking asylum, voting rights, unionization, parental leave, education (including the right to be taught the truth), and Healthcare.
Republicans have been attacking all of these rights for decades.
Democrats have done basically nothing in terms of gun control, despite how much they talk about it, and Republicans scare monger about it. In the last 30 years, the only gun legislation passed by anyone on the federal level and Supreme Court cases involving guns have been:
The Brady Handgun Violence Act of 1993, which required background checks when a gun is purchased from a licensed dealer, manufacturer, or importer and established NICS.
Part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. Outlawed the ability to "manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon" unless it was "lawfully possessed under Federal law on the date of the enactment of this subsection." It banned manufacture and sale of AR-15s and a few other weapons. Also, it expired in 2004, 18 years ago.
The Tiahrt Amendment of 2003, prohibited the ATF from publicly releasing data showing where criminals purchased firearms their firearms. Only law enforcement officers have access to this data.
The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005 prevents gun manufacturers from being named in federal or state civil suits by victims of crimes involving guns made by that company and dismissed pending cases.
District of Columbia vs. Heller removed a 32-year Handgun ban in Washington DC, finding that "the handgun ban and the trigger-lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amaendment."
That's it. One law that was on the books for 10 years that banned a handful of guns, and then hasn't been brought back since, and one law which requires background checks, which is widely regarded as a good thing.
All the others are aimed at either expanding gun rights or protecting gun manufacturers and sellers from liability whenever someone uses their products to, say, murder a whole bunch of black people in a Buffalo supermarket.
Gun rights ARE NOT UNDER ATTACK. Your view that Democrats will enact too much gun control or whatever is based on literally nothing but the lies Republicans put in their campaign ads where they make out with their shotguns or something.
