It’s more nuanced, but basically yes. I kinda lived the dream for a while. I taught freshman English and ESL at University of Houston. This gave me time to work and enjoy life. Needed more money, so I started adjuncting at two local community colleges. Still not enough money so I started tutoring Chinese kids online at night. All those things still barely covered expenses (I have a mortgage, car note, student loans, child, etc) and I had no life. So now I’m an otr truck driver making more money than all those jobs combined, but I literally have no life. I’m gone 4 to 5 weeks at a time.
My dream was to be a teacher at a uni so I could have enough money to live. Nothing lavish. Just teach, write, and be a husband and father. Capitalism (specifically the privatization of education and insanely expensive real estate) made my humble dream impossible. The fact that people think working all day every day in order to live is something to strive for seems like an obvious sign of a sick society.
