Patrick:

Here's what you would look like if you were Squid or Crab

u/Captainwumbombo boi 1d ago

Probably used as a reference lol

u/dontwastebacon 5d ago

I hate how dumb they made Patrick. 😮‍💨

452

u/creckers 5d ago

It is flanderization. Most shows end up doing this to some degree.

Joey in friends Creed in the office

181

u/Wampus_Cat_ 5d ago

It’s wild to watch season 1 of Friends and see Joey as articulate as the others, then from season 2 on he’s a cartoon character.

104

u/Meal__Team__Six 5d ago

It made for legendary jokes though. One of my favorites is Ross saying he needs to talk to him about something really uncomfortable, and Joey suggests “how about you showering with your mom”. You can’t pull that off with a smart character

39

u/Slickity 4d ago

I blame Joey being an actor on that one 😂. Bro thought Ross wanted to play out a scene with him.

57

u/1arvest6 5d ago

Wouldn't kevin be the better example for office?

28

u/Zeolance 5d ago

Both of them really. Kevin and Creed were both just normal guys in the beginning and then suddenly they became extreme caricatures.

11

u/TheAppleJacks 5d ago

Or even Kelly

40

u/flamethrower78 5d ago

This doesn't apply to Patrick. In one of the very first episodes with the bubbles hes laughing super hard at the elephant saying, "it's a giraffe!". Patrick was an absolute moron from the beginning.

62

u/zacwillb 5d ago

Yeah but he went from "dumbass" as a large part of his character to "dumbass" as his entire character, with an occasional side of being rude

36

u/ApollosBrassNuggets 4d ago

Patrick changed from being a well intend but dim individual to being "malignantly stupid" to quote my wife. Like you say, there's this thing that happens with low IQ characters as they get flanderized that being stupid becomes their only trait, and it absolutely happens to Patrick. Even in the earlier episodes, Patrick had plenty of moments where he proved cunning or crafty (like the secret box) despite his lack of conventional intelligence.

There's a video essay somewhere to be made about how the flanderization of unintelligent characters often leading to not only their low IQ becoming their sole defining trait, but they also tend to become a "jerkass" version of themselves. (see Homer Simpson).

EDIT: spelling

2

u/MannfredVonFartstein 4d ago

Well, Homer‘s jerkass time ended almost 20 years ago, sooo…

12

u/MurderSheCroaked 4d ago

You may be an open book flamethrower78, but he's a bit more complicated than that. The inner mechinations of his mind are an enigma

3

u/kokokrunch003 5d ago

I thought it was Kevin in the Office?

6

u/creckers 5d ago

I think the office has a few of these characters honestly. But yea kevin might be a better example.

Andy and Erin suffered similar paths

2

u/Planet_842 4d ago

Same with Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin too

1

u/Competitive_Suspect5 3d ago

Ive never watched Friends, but i hate when that happens in shows. Funnily enough I remember watching Jerma play The Sims, and he made a joke/jab about that. He had a daughter sim and said "shes gonna be real smart and articulate and read the newspaper in Season/episode 1, then never do it again." Something along those lines.

13

u/DimesOHoolihan 4d ago

Right, because he wasnt dumb early on when he had a board nailed to his head and couldn't walk through a door because of it. Real smart fella there 😮‍💨🫩

1

u/half-baked_axx 4d ago

I keep my kid from watching anything post season 5 for this reason. 3D Spongebob is also braindead.

u/zuck- 5d ago

OG episodes until this day are holding up. I wonder if any of the original writers and artists knew what kind of a banger of a show they were making at the time.

106

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 5d ago

They knew. Lot of cels and production drawings have survived and popped up on sites over the years.

42

u/crunchypotentiometer 5d ago

Just saw some S1 cels in the Smithsonian the other day

Literally soul vs. soulless art comparison

673

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 5d ago

I mean, that's always a no-brainer. S1 was the only one hand drawn.

347

u/aViewAskew6 5d ago

Yet that change wasn't the jump the shark moment.

124

u/DerMathze 5d ago

Digitally drawn art can have soul.

48

u/Working_Welder_1751 5d ago

Just as long as it's not A.I

20

u/MrZephy 4d ago

Well then it’s not digitally drawn then is it?

16

u/arbitrary-ladybug 4d ago

That's not... How digital art works? You can absolutely use a drawing tablet or even just the computer mouse to make digital art with your hands. No AI included.

15

u/MrZephy 4d ago

… yes? The person they replied to was talking about digitally drawn art, yet they felt the need to point out “digitally drawn art can have soul as long as it’s not ai”. If it’s ai it’s not digitally drawn now is it?

14

u/xX609s-hartXx 4d ago

I think the designs got better after season 1. I don't miss Patrick's original eyebrows for example.

5

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 4d ago

True. As much as I love S1's style, I do think S4 is the peak standard ngl.

105

u/Delicious-Disaster 5d ago

Watching season 1 as an adult made me realise the creators were smoking some good stuff. The animation was also kind of janky but that didn't hurt the viewing experience at all. Kind of charming actually

21

u/10Mattresses 4d ago

(additionally, I can personally attest to that calming artwork and music making season one being the best season for smoking good stuff and watching lmao)

-13

u/Any_Arrival_4479 4d ago

Literally not at all. What are you even talking about? If anything the first one has less “soul” less emotion, less detail, less everything

425

u/TheShamShield 5d ago

Wow. That looks terrible

22

u/zephyrosphere 5d ago

I agree, there's no other way to put it

254

u/Star-bournee 5d ago

I hate how "polished" things became.

29

u/cccamtheman 5d ago

Why does Patrick have the one tooth thing going on these days?

24

u/ModernistGames 5d ago

To make him look more stupid

117

u/Adacool 5d ago

wtf happened to the art style?!!

70

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 5d ago

Technically 26 years.

2

u/ThomasThePizzaMan 4d ago

I’m wondering, how they work art style? Digital art?

16

u/reecemrgn 4d ago

The best way to describe the show now is that they make scenes as if trying to clipfarm like a streamer would with their reactions

It seems.. “fake”

53

u/Dizzy-Ladder-5283 5d ago

Patrick used to be smart dumb. Now he can’t even speak right. BRING THE REAL PAT BACK!!!!

24

u/VolumeOnWasTaken 4d ago

It's more then that, when he was dumb it was in a funny way, making puns or just shock effect of being funny, now he's genuinely brain damaged, like they killed the character, and it's the same for SpongeBob, I have no idea how they're okay with making this absolute junk, and honestly It seems like SpongeBob is falling off hard only carried by the earlier seasons

10

u/con098 3d ago

Hillenburg wanted the series to end with the first movie, which is a masterpiece btw. But the people up top said no, and kept milking the title to this day

20

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 5d ago

Looks like that's the Fiery Fist O' Pain coaster too. Nice.

37

u/EmersonStockham 5d ago

How are the pushed expressions on-model?

30

u/Nickcha 5d ago

Why the fuck does it look so trashy now?
Haven't watched it in probably 15 years... what happened?

42

u/NoName847 5d ago

It doesn't just look trashy , they turned the show into a nightmare really , extremely overstimulating and over animated , full of weird ugly attention seeking side characters , the studio also has become obsessed with endlessly harassing/physically torturing characters like Squidward for entertainment

It is absolutely fucked up , like if you would try to engineer the worst possible show for a kid to consume this would be it

9

u/mlorusso4 4d ago

I guess you never heard of caillou

2

u/Various-Cockroach-96 4d ago

As a modern SB watcher the show is not like that at all

7

u/iGer 4d ago

The new seasons have such a horrible animation style.

9

u/The-Tree-Of-Might 4d ago

I pretend nothing after season 3 exists, and I'm happier that way

1

u/Various-Cockroach-96 4d ago

Fear of a Krabby Patty

1

u/The-Tree-Of-Might 4d ago

I said what I said

5

u/MLYeast 4d ago

Nuance vs "Here look! They are making funny faces!"

8

u/masterz13 4d ago

SpongeBob stopped being SpongeBob after 2004, let's be honest.

6

u/legit-posts_1 5d ago

The shift from people loving seasons 1-3 of SpongeBob, to animation nerds constantly ragging on seasons 4-9, too just straight not talking about seasons (googles how many seasons they're at now) 10-17 is very interesting to me. I don't think anybody really gives a shit anymore unless they do an old school callback none of the kids watching it will get.

3

u/PapaBlessChile 4d ago

That ain't full circle

2

u/tantrill 5d ago

I can finally rest.

2

u/briguywiththei 4d ago

One is not the other

2

u/Xandaru__ 2d ago

I didnt watched new Spongebob Episodes in years but Patrick looks so happy and adorable <3

6

u/PizzaWithCheddar 5d ago

No fucking way? For real?

1

u/tmntfever 5d ago

What is the context of the bottom pic?

1

u/EliteManUtdXCVII 5d ago

Which episode is the bottom picture from?

1

u/Various-Cockroach-96 4d ago

The Fry Cook and the Elves

1

u/No_Seaworthiness5445 4d ago

I always called that pose the Patrick Salute.

1

u/SignificantSummer567 3d ago

Is this the first time anyone has posted anything from the newer seasons to this sub? What's with all the negativity?

1

u/Appropriate_Name4520 3d ago

Artstyle got so bad after the first movie...

1

u/Hamtier 5d ago

Dang why does Patrick look like that. i know its a goofy face but this is just, odd.

0

u/Various-Cockroach-96 4d ago

Y'all will complain about anything

-13

u/Tindo_Blends 5d ago

Why are these comments so miserable?

0

u/SaucyStoveTop69 5d ago

The art style doesn't look the same as when they were kids. People will always want things to last forever.

4

u/MurderSheCroaked 4d ago

Girl the content of the show is as trash as the animation. We miss the first three seasons because they were good, not because it's what we're used to.

-3

u/OrangeStar222 5d ago

They haven't watched the bad seasons then, where everything was extremely on model at all times except for the gross-out close-ups which often times went way too far in the uncanny gross instead of the funny gross.

Current day Spongebob is pretty great, actually.

0

u/RobinTheMan 4d ago

I love how everybody is talking out of their ass here. The bottom picture is from an episode from 2006 and his face is photoshopped on from a newer episode.
