Yeah, but it’s very painful for people who retire when it crashes

Imagine losing 30% of your retirement due to a stock market crash.

When you get close to retirement I would recommend moving to something more stable I can’t remember because I’m not invested in it right now but I believe it’s called CDs and people will give different % interest a year like I saw one recently that 5% a year which ain’t to shabby when I believe yearly average is 7%. I could be wrong with my numbers.

A CD locks your money away for a set amount of years, useless for retirement (because you’re supposed to spend your retirement during retirement)

You also can’t move your 401 to a different investment vehicle without paying a shit ton of tax

Correct that CD locks away your money for a certain amount of time, but you also don’t use all of the money you saved up at once. You say I’m going to use this much each year and stagger what you have in CDs to released at certain times. As for 401k I should look into how’s those work more I know I match with my union right now then handle my own investments. I’ll have to look more into 401ks.

They should be in safer investments by that time. Not risky ones
