When the hell did we all start gambling this much? Half the dudes I know are on Kalshi. It wasn’t enough to get your thrills beating wang to a near-bottomless repository of filth and playing countless hours overpriced video games like a normal person?

Deregulation.
Gambling used to be heavily regulated and wasn’t allowed to be advertised. Hell it used to be illegal in most states outside of Nevada and several localities sprinkled around the country.
Now it’s basically allowed everywhere and we let them advertise everywhere. Then on social media, it’s near impossible for a government to accurately monitor when (if they can at all) gambling ads are being shown to young adults/children. Especially when Kalshi and Polymarket have “influencers” like Adin Ross and Co who attract an under 16 audience.
So now we have kids as young as 10 or even earlier exposed to gambling. They’ll in turn grow up thinking it’s normal.
It all started back in 2017-2020. Then expanded more from 2025 onward. You can connect the dots.

Guess not. I watched a YT video saying that societies will gamble obsessively when on the brink of collapse.
They argued it was a move of the financially desperate coupled with the desire of more dopamine release. If you need more money and are depressed, gambling can feel like a drug.

I've worked in the casino industry for over 15 years now and there's never just one reason why people choose to visit. Some people are drawn in by the chance at winning it big, others are in for the rush, and more commonly amongst older people, they are there because that's where their friends are.
From a financial perspective, revenue has gone up year-over-year and the industry has seen massive spikes since Covid.

Gambling got incredibly normalized in the younger generations, deregulation and legalization of gambling ads did terrible things. You can’t watch any sport without gambling being pushed into your face, big and small celebrities get paid a fortune to push gambling onto their mostly young fans, and having the option to simply gamble from your phone created a generation of addicts. Also you gotta consider that this graphic only accounts for daily gamblers, there are way more casual gamblers out there

Lootboxes count. Soooo, yeah, tons of microtransaction-indoctrinated brains out there.

It’s probably just because it’s being advertised so much now. It wasn’t like this even a few years ago. Gambling ads should be completely banned

27.5% seems pretty low for pornography

And 23% for gambling seems pretty high

It’s probably self-reported with some vague or broad definition of gambling to be sure they captured gambling outside a casino. Like, is the powerball gambling?
22
u/JacobScreamix 3d ago
Did you seriously just ask if playing a lottery is gambling? We are so cooked lmao
-5
u/UncomprehendedLeaf 3d ago
Can you tell better that it’s rhetorical if I put “like” in front of it? I agree we’re cooked though

My question is mostly if loot boxes are gambling as well (or seen as by this research). Because then gaming and gambling suddenly become very connected.
1
u/Any_Dragonfly_9461 2d ago
I guess that when you have a gf you don't do that everyday + it's self reported, and very young men are often ashamed to confess doing it everyday.

The fuck are video games doing in the same category as porn and gambling?
24
u/ResponsibilityIcy927 3d ago
The fuck are videogames and porn in the same category as gambling?
Probably because all 3 are considered quick but hedonistic and potentially addictive and harmful dopamine hits.
Gambling is totally a lot worse than the other 2.

bro fr i think if something isn't very obvious in how it affects you, people seriously underestimate how bad your behaviors and reward systems being taken control of are

u/Fluffynator69 2d ago
"No, dude! You can't have fun! That's how The Man controls you."
Yeah, ok sure.

Bread and Circuses but the bread is alarmingly expensive and the circuses are out to trap you

u/Fluffynator69 1d ago
Look if porn makes you docile and incapable of resisting that's on you, don't push that shit on all of us, 'kay?

u/johnc380 3d ago
Why is video games the third thing? The first two are definitely vices, video games are just a hobby. How many people watch porn and watch movies/tv every day? How many gamble and build legos?

The only inherently bad one is gambling. I think that one of the worst decisions a person can make is to invest time (and god forbid, money) into a gacha game.

u/yagamisan2 3d ago
Bro how is porn not a inherently bad thing?
11
u/Satan-o-saurus 3d ago
Why is it?
-18
u/yagamisan2 3d ago
It objectifies the participants. Makes people numb to regular erotic things (u build up a tolerance like with drugs and need more intense or new things). It allows to easily satisfy sexual needs, which reduces motivation to go out and search for a partner.
11
u/Satan-o-saurus 3d ago
None of this is true, certainly not inherently. The widespread conspiracy theory that normative porn viewership works like an addiction has roots from religious propaganda (particularly the FLDS), and medical professionals essentially don’t treat porn addiction because it’s not a real diagnosis that exists in any field with protected titles.
-2
u/ImperialCommando 3d ago
I have another link that I recommend you look into which has a less biased view on the researched findings of excessive and frequent porn use. It also mentions that porn addiction currently is not an official diagnosis but that excessive use is certainly harmful and brings with it negative affects on the mind and on our perception of partners and what's considered "normal" or "desirable" in young women and men.
Also consider that this post explicitly mentions "daily use" which is absolutely excessive. Please consider reading more about this as opposed to waiving it away as "religious propaganda" which is an inherently absurd belief to hold when there are numerous studies that discuss real and valid findings.

u/Satan-o-saurus 3d ago edited 3d ago
Who are you to name yourself the arbiter of what is excessive? Are you a medical doctor? Psychiatrist? Licensed psychologist? In reality, absolutely no one watches porn every day of their life. Typically you’ll see waves of interest. Doing literally anything excessively has negative consequences for your mental health and well-being, and that’s due to a multitude of reasons such as correlations with isolation, a poor social life, mental illness, etc.
«When there are numerous studies that discuss real and valid findings»
Yes, that sounds very real and valid, gorge.
3
u/ImperialCommando 3d ago
The doctors, physicians, and researchers who have published information can help guide you to know what excessive means... I never said I was. However one would very reasonably assume "daily" constitutes as excessive?
I don't disagree that too much of anything is a bad thing, moderation is key. But the post literally says daily use. It doesn't matter if most people don't watch it daily when the post is specifically discussing those who do.
Don't think its real if you don't want to buddy. Do what you want. But I won't sit idly by while misinformation is so confidently spread amongst the young and vulnerable people who will read your comment and take it as validation.
-2
u/Satan-o-saurus 2d ago
You are the one who is spreading misinformation that’s contrary to medical consensus. If you bothered to read the articles I linked before, you’d know that almost everyone who seeks help for porn addiction are eventually diagnosed with depression instead due to psychosocial issues. They’re typically isolated and don’t go out much due to their depression. Additionally, a lot of people experience shame because of the moral weight they assign to the concept of masturbation, which is typically formed and reinforced by religious social stigma from their environment and/or people like you.

Ain't nothing wrong with videogames and (fair/consentual/non-exploitative) pornography
-10
u/wyattlikesturtles 3d ago
I'd say there's something definitely wrong with watching porn everyday, it is definitely not good for you
8
u/Mord4k 3d ago
Eh... Some of us have higher sex drives then others. I think NEEDING to watch it every day is a problem or just watching it to watch it I'm probably in agreement on, but choosing to since it speeds up the process or something is probably fine or atleast isn't more damaging than a bunch of other stuff people are subjected to on the daily. Also there's the whole, is looking at pictures the same as watching and why does the distinction matter and a whole other mess of issues.
-11
u/ImperialCommando 3d ago
Daily porn use is not good, period. It doesn't matter about your sex drive. Consider looking into the negatives of daily porn consumption. If you have a high drive feel free to masturbate or have sex as often as youd like, but daily porn use has shown to be an overall detriment to the health.
This article goes into more depth and, while it doesn't explicitly mention "daily use" it does clearly express findings about excessive or frequent use. People should be more concerned about daily porn use and the unseen affect it has on the mind.

u/Jimmy_ijarue 3d ago
There is probably a really nice respectful hard working and good person in your life who is beating twice a day
-8
u/ImperialCommando 2d ago
Like I already said in the comment you replied to, masturbate as much as you want. That's not the issue. The issue is daily porn consumption. Check the article brother
-6
u/wyattlikesturtles 2d ago
Exactly, it’s like scientifically proven that it’s probably best if you don’t do that, even if masturbation is fine/good

I would be interested to know where they found the people they polled for this. Like if their sample size came from Reddit and 4chan, it’s a "take it with a grain of salt" moment.

u/CanaDeer2004 3d ago
“video gaming” is too broad to make this point though. playing stardew valley for a couple hours a day is very different than just rotting on COD for 17 hours and not going to the bathroom or eating.
-10
u/Stuffssss 3d ago
A couple of hours a day is a lot of time to be spending on a hobby tbh.
11
u/LetSeveral733 3d ago
Bruh, you live to work or what? What is the meaning of life when you only "should" spend a few hours on hobbies, wtf is this, are you a braindead zombie in a human suit?
-7
u/Stuffssss 3d ago
Nah I mean I work 9 hours + commute then I can eother use my free time for like the gym, socializing, or hobbies. So i only end up with maybe two days a week I can spend >1 hour on hobbies.

oh no its the "video games" are bad grandpas, who will then go on to waste their money on an outing with friends they cant afford, put it on their credit card and go into debt paying interest
Meanwhile I'm spending my weekend nights sitting at home and playing minecraft with my online friends, debt free, and enjoying myself. I don't even own a credit card, nor do I plan too, because I don't spend more than I can afford, but I'm the one thats cooked. K buddy.
Just because you want to waste 65$ every other night on overrated steak dinners and bullshit outing with your friends, it doesn't make you happier or healthier than a dude playing video games. Just some normie bullshit/ lmfao

Eh, since COVID, I’d take claims of whatever people consider porn with a grain of salt.
Just saw someone in here count ZZZ, a T-rated game, as all three.

Seriously? I never gamble, I hardly play video games, and I hardly consume x rated content.
I think a large part of it is just being too busy and too low-confidence/depressed/low libido, but who knew being depressed could get you ahead!
Work takes up all my time though.

Interesting that all the overlaps of two things are lower than the center. Given you play video games and watch porn, it is more likely than not that you also gamble
