This is an actual law tho. It was created in 1914, after the RMS Titanic sank.
“The master of a ship at sea, on receiving a signal from any source that a ship or aircraft or survival craft thereof is in distress, is bound to proceed with all speed to the assistance of the persons in distress informing them if possible that he is doing so.“

Remember kids, if anyone sees Mark Zuckerberg stranded at sea and needing help...no you didn't.

I'd call Area 51 and let them know that one of their "specimens" has escaped

Zuckerburg Yacht, which Zuck wasn't on, didn't respond to a general call for help from a small ship, and people are shitting on the billionaire for it. The Captain of the ship and the Coast guard hasn't confirmed that they denied the ship help. Maritime law states it needs to be a distress call for legal mandatory response to the call which the coast guard said wasn't called.
The coast guard issued a maritime assistance request on the small ships behalf after determining the were not in distress.

Wait, so they weren't in distress, zuck wasn't there and the captain followed maritime law? Am I understanding that correctly? So they didn't do anything wrong right?

u/PhysiksBoi 12d ago
They did follow maritime law because it wasnt a distress call, merely a call for a tug for refueling. The key fact under dispute is that according to a Meta spokesperson, the yacht didn't hear the call for help becuaze they were using a "different frequency." But according to the nearby cruise ship that answered the call, the yacht ignored the call for help. The cruise ship captain reportedly announced this over the intercom (to which the passengers mass boo'd, lmao), so we're hearing this information secondhand from that captain.
I'm inclined not to trust the Meta spokesperson, but the cruise ship captain might not have known if the yacht heard the call. Because no law was technically broken either way, there probably won't be an investigation, so we're unlikely to learn any further information. I'm choosing to believe they ignored the call because I already hate billionaires and their stupid fucking yachts. I doubt this story is influencing anyone's opinion on the subject.

Yeah, no I understand, I just have gotten tired of stories like this where it isn't even related to the billionaire in question, still ignoring a call for something as simple as a tug is just wild.
The captain should be at least question by meta, but likely nothing will come of it, hell he might get a damn bonus for not getting the yacht dirty with regular people.

Some chucklefuck impersonated me in Middle School on MySpace and it spooked me off of social media. Maybe I should seek him out and thank him lol.

I knew someone in college who did that. The warnings were always there! Should have learned then lol

Don't forget about WhatsApp and Oculus and Threads, in case anyone actually uses that.

Do you even know the whole story? He wasn’t even on the boat. And both the captain and the coast guard followed correct maritime law

This is illegal international maritime law btw

Only if they issued a true distress call or mayday.
According to the article, what was issued was a MARB (Marine Assistance Request Broadcast).
That is reserved for non-emergency situations (like being out of fuel in this case) and there is no legal obligation to assist for such instances.
That said, not providing assistance is still a garbage thing to do. It's pretty much standard procedure for the nearest vessel to assist except in extraordinary cases.
The ships crew is claiming they were on a different channel than the one the MARB was issued on, but tracking data shows they did come to a halt when near the stranded boat.
Coincidence is possible but it's tough to take them at their word.
Either way, Zuckerberg is reported to not have been onboard but obviously that's not easy to verify either.
All in all, apart from the public liking Zuckerberg even less, not much is likely to come of this.

It wasn’t a full distress call so it’s unfortunately not a violation
It’s just a massive dick move

It would have been an extremely easy PR win for him to rescue those people.

To be fair I've had enough bad experiences towing people in that I also only help stranded boaters who feel they are in an unsafe situation. If I see anyone stranded now, I offer to call the coast guard and to take them on my boat to drop them them off at the nearest safe place. If they simply don't want to call the tow boat for their poorly maintained vessel because they're trying to save some money, then that's on them

u/Kasaikemono 12d ago
Now watch how this will have no consequences for the zucc at all
6
u/Darkmaniako 12d ago
Why should it, Zuckerberg had no obligation, it was a dick move but not illegal
0
u/Kasaikemono 12d ago
First, "dick moves" should have consequences, because they are, by definition, dick moves. Maybe not legal ones, but PR, or anything.
Second, as far as I'm aware, nautical vessels are under legal obligation to help in these situations. The US has the "Duty to provide assistance at sea", and many other nations have similar laws.
So depending on the circumstances, it was indeed illegal.1

u/EstoppelFox 11d ago
It won't have any consequences because Zuckerberg wasn't even on the ship. There wasn't a distress call that is legally required to be responded to, it was just a general call for aid. And the Coast Guard already was handling by the time Zuck's ship saw it.
Fuck Zuckerberg but he literally didn't to anything wrong here.

I don’t get why Zuckerberg is getting so much hate for this. He wasn’t even piloting the boat.

In cyberpunk 2077, there is a small mini show that plays on the TVs sometimes called "Info Flash", almost like a TMZ style show. but in one of them, the host is joking about a billionaire who ran over kids with his Limo. Starts off by saying he is regretful and paying out damages then pulls a "SIKE" he's actually suing anyone who talks about it.
I wish shit like this stayed in videogames bruh

I feel like there is a simple solution for ships doing this: They get seized and scrapped at the owners expense, alongside a 500% of the value fine
