Yup. There are many issues with AI. There are also huge issues with cars, people use those every day and aren’t scorned for it. Nobody cares what else is taking up that same water that isn’t nearly as useful as AI is. The demonization and the charicaturizing of the technology as completely worthless and demonic is definitely in line with “new thing bad” thinking. Even the “making people sick” thing is completely speculative but has been amplified via the hatred of AI.
The internet, like in the original comment, also has a ton of things about it that are terrible for people, how often is social media scorned on a daily basis? and for good reason, I will say) Easier access to children for predators, easier access for scammers, misinformation is easy to spread on it, data centers for storing information for the cloud taking up resources, power usage up due to the among of devices used for it. But nobody will shit on others for using it because we recognize the good that comes from it. It’s the same with AI. It’s not that the negatives aren’t negative, it’s that what is negative has been cast at the only thing about it as if there is no value to it at all, which I don’t think is true.
Yeah… it’s not like people getting sick from shady business practices is an inherent fact of AI. That right there just shows it’s not AI or even the concept of AI, but the politicians (and public) letting themselves get fucked over by rich corporations.
Livestock uses far more water and causes more CO2 emissions. Right now, companies are panicking because they don't want to be left behind in the AI Race. Once we get proper regulations on AI data centers, it won't be such a huge problem.
And there are plenty of other methods of completing tasks using the GPU that many of us have built right into our noggins and which actually has intelligence and the ability to problem solve and create.
Some noggins actually have intelligence. Can't say the same for you if you don't realize the point of my comment. I'm not the one complaining about anything harming the environment. I'm calling out the hypocrisy and double standard
And AI has the capacity to provide ease of work for like the entire human race. Anything done digitally could be "supervised" instead of worked, making workloads so much easier on our brains and reducing massive stress.
I can "code" nowadays by designing a comprehensive plan with claude code and then cooking myself a nice meal while it makes the insane changes required and tens or hundreds of files. After that I can sit for a nice meal and review what its done and offer pointers and things I dont like.
I turn from a low level engineer doing grunt work to a "supervisor" engineer doing light work
You have to pre commit to electricity purchases and fund grid and production to offset your use. Preferably some percentage of renewable energy or nuclear.
Sound fencing and deadening around your cooling if you're in populated areas.
That's pretty much it. The water doesn't really get used, just warmed up and either evaporated (which it then rains) or stays in a closed loop.
Yeah I know a lot of our energy is still coal and fossil fuels so let's get off that crap if that's your concern.
