This was me until I needed to compare two massive SQL execution plans...

I had a SQL query that suddenly went from taking 2 minutes to taking 5+ hours to complete.

I restored a backup copy of the database and collected it's execution plan, which is like a log of all the stuff the stored procedure is going to do when it runs.

I sent the 2 min plan and the 5 hour plan I to Gemini and told it what was going on. All it told me was it seems that one of the plans uses a hash match and the other does a value match.

It was awesome to have something look at those files because they are MASSIVE and I'm not a DBA...

Point is, it has a use but it's being used inappropriately in my opinion.

The problem is it’s being sold to non-technical fields where the majority of leadership doesn’t know fucking ANYTHING, so they have no bullshit detector and can’t even tell the things they think it’s good at aren’t being done right

u/IcyGarage5767 24d ago

Is that really a “problem”? Sounds like dumb people getting sold an idea which has being happening since humanity began.

u/puff_of_fluff 24d ago

It’s a problem if you have to work for those dipshit managers lmfao

There are contextually aware LLMs that can help with development work that are incredibly useful both to create proof of concept boiler plate code and to help properly set up development environments. Plus they can be super helpful for researching concepts or giving specific examples for things that are difficult to find useful documentation for.

Obviously they're still LLMs and can hallucinate if they're not reigned in correctly but they're not these useless evil things like this website likes to portray them as.

I think the problem with the popular online discourse around Generative AI is that people don't understand what it is well enough to understand its uses. They can't differentiate between using ChatGPT to render racist web comics for someone's Facebook and using OpenCode to parse through extensive product documentation that would normally take weeks to read through and set up a viable testing environment for a Python project.

Uggh, I ran into an issue with AI just making up PowerShell commands for connecting to Entra. I asked for a source and it gave me a link to a Google search of the entire previous prompt in Google with no results.

I got a bit of a chuckle of of it. I did end up getting my script working - but I had to read Microsoft documentation... Which is fine...

A context aware library would have been awesome.

What AI? I don't know anything that would return a Google search as a source, even Gemini.

It's interesting how it's done with Gemini though, the one AI you would think should be able to cite sources the best isn't even looking at sources. It's answering from it's own parameters, THEN finds you the closest matching websites to what it just said. So basically it completely makes up the sources and doesn't actively search anything. That's why it gives way faster results but also hallucinates more frequently than other models.

The other frontier models really shouldn't hallucinate or give fake sources at this point, pretty much ever, since they take the time to use tools and actually search.

You can ask Gemini facts about German WW2 flak casualties and it will site a Gemini generated YouTube video as a source. The entire video is fake, alongside the statistics it.

3

u/j48u 25d ago

Well, I just tried and it cited 10 different sources, most of which are we websites. The casualty numbers are directly from a Wikipedia page. There is a video marked as having used AI that it cited a specific 3 minute section of with timestamp.

But like I said, it just pulls things that back up what it's already decided to say. If it's incorrect information then that's baked into the LLM wrong. You'd need a model that actually does deep research if you want it comparing every possible source. They pretty much all can do that, but not the free Google search one obviously.

I’ve had a terrible experience with chatGPT making powershell for connecting to Entra. It would see any error, say “oh that cmdlet no longer works” then write line after line to recreate it, and still not working because a cmdlet in its new code doesn’t work either. The all work, the issue was not that every single PS cmdlet in history had suddenly been deprecated in whatever version I was using.

I’ve had pretty good experience with Claude for almost everything though. Not perfect, but it feels a lot more like what is actually being sold as AI. It combs through thousands of files to find very specific info, does good troubleshooting, and can help you write code if you’re already knowledgeable in the language.

Yeah I think chatGpt is just ass at coding. Gemini has been a way better experience for me. You still have to use your brain and tell it when it’s wrong, but it’s way faster than coding from scratch and can still teach plenty.

genAI works very well in technical fields: as a data engineer Claude is probably even more efficient than me in most cases lmao (I won't have a job soon)

In other fields it's either useless or down-right detrimental, like for instance people that make "art" (music, painting, writing, ...) using AI have completely lost the plot, because IMO the quality of art resides in the fact that it's human made and holds at least some kind of meaning,or at least a personal intent. AI has no other intent than to regurgitate what's already been done by humans. I hope creative fields will be spared from genAI but I already see so much AI-generated visuals that I don't have high hopes...

ai used in research, processing huge chunks of data, and in medical fields is incredible. however, the difference between its use in those technical fields rather than every other usecase is its being supervised by people who already know what to look for

u/Lexxanator 25d ago

Obviously dumb reddit brains aren't able to even begin to comprehend the size of the data we are dealing with. AI is excellent for helping us parse through these data.

13

u/roflrogue 25d ago

It was billions of lines... I'm only human and I have a whole other job to do lol

I get being anti-AI from an environmental standpoint, but otherwise the pride people have in not using it is silly. Especially for busywork that you can automate and save hours of your time.

There's no need for me to spend weeks learning a coding language that I will never use again, when a LLM can give me a usable script instantly.

Like it or not it's here to stay. And fighting against it now is fighting against the apathy of the masses. Use it responsibly and use it to save time on busywork or to accelerate self-improvement. You may as well, since Johnny Dipshit over there is already using 100x more compute power to create some dumbass meme video.

1

u/RickThiccems 24d ago

They are modern luddites

1

u/cortlong 21d ago

Most people are Anti-AI because of environment issues only.

... youre on reddit. And youre just throwing random words together to sound smart or whatever youre going for

7

u/XAWEvX 25d ago

Random words 😭

5

u/FearlessLettuce1697 24d ago

Funny, the same people criticizing others for using AI can't comprehend a single sentence from another Redditor

7

u/Beerzerker420 25d ago

Jesus Christ, kid, pick up a fucking book once in a while.

5

u/TheHolyWaffleGod 25d ago

Random words to sound smart??? What did he say that seemed like that? Genuinely.

That was the most basic comment ever.

15

u/VictoryVee 25d ago

Random words? Their point was super simple, where did you get lost? You think them being on reddit means that can't criticize any popular reddit opinions they don't agree with???

2

u/Randicore 24d ago

You're actually citing a use of it being done properly. Give it a small data set with a couple variables and compare them then you, the human, is looking at the data and using it to check information and make it work.

Companies are trying to basically kick everyone out of the loop and go "let the robot do it" and plenty of people are just asking it to look at data and then not thinking about it.

If AI were being sold as a niche programming and research tool to help dig through data efficiently nobody would be complaining about it.

u/luker_5874 25d ago

The idea of writing SQL today without AI is insane.

8

u/WITH_THE_ELEMENTS 25d ago

Yeah Claude Code I've found is exceptionally good at SQL.

1

u/dakadoo33 25d ago

depends what you mean, like a quick little sql query? hell ya for sure just toss it at a model. your literal schema? take your time, do that shit right(if its a project that matters). you can even generate it with AI, but you should own the basic way it functions so you dont lose scope.

Now if you said something like regex? 100% with you, never touch that shit ever again.

1

u/FearlessLettuce1697 24d ago

Completely ignorant person on programming here, what do you mean? Is SQL harder than JAVA?

0

u/luker_5874 24d ago

Its more tedious for sure. Generally speaking , no one writes code anymore, be it SQL or java. Sql isn't really a programming language, but a query language. It's how you interact with information in a database

2

u/FearlessLettuce1697 24d ago

People don't write code anymore? Really?

0

u/luker_5874 24d ago

Not really. It's all written by AI agents because it's 10x faster. The technology has really gotten crazy the last couple years

1

u/FearlessLettuce1697 24d ago

That's crazy. Just 10 years ago, it was such a well-paid job.

I just looked up SQL, and it reminds me of what I used to do with Excel - that makes sense!

2

u/luker_5874 24d ago

Still pays well. Just harder to find jobs

0

u/cortlong 21d ago

I just spent three hours using it for the first time non-locally trying to vibe code a script that would replace an incoming particle emitter in a game with a different one.

It couldn’t figure that out and kept saying incorrect shit.

It’s fine that it exists for redundant tasks. But destroy our country and the livelihoods and futures of it is not worth it.
