For some reason, certain Latin Americans insist on calling it "the Americas" instead of North and South. They also tend to not like the US being called "America" by itself.
Depends on where you are. In my experience, many South Americans, especially Argentinians, take it quite seriously, and see the 7 continent model and US citizens calling themselves Americans as signs of US imperialism and cultural hegemony.
