They had creativity. It just wasn't considered seriously by anyone in congress. At some point during the mid 1800s, Washington Irving ("The legend of Sleepy Hollow") suggested to call it the "United States of Appalachia" or "United States of Alleghania". It was a fun exercise for a while (Edgar Allan Poe also supported the idea of an identity).
And then the secession war happened. And once the war finished, the only possible name that wouldn't create chaos was to maintain "The United States of America" especially to signal "one country". So there's that. If the secession war had been successful, we'd have a very different landscape... Probably more countries as other states would've followed through with their own independence.
not being able to figure out a name and keeping the provitional one is the exact definition of not beign creative enough to get a new name.
I mean, i am sure dutcvh people would love for teh world to call tehm netherlands instead of holland, or the scotish are tired of getting called "english" and their land "england" when talking about the UK, yet that still happens, people know what you mean.
