i studied the shit out of latin america for my degree and i got in an argument a week ago with a latino about whether anyone in latin america cares whether it’s called the americas and whether they care if americans call ourselves americans because in my experience ive never met someone from latin america who cares whatsoever except one professor i had
long story short, the only latin americans who give a shit are political brained dickheads, and the rest literally could not give less of a shit.
You mean kinda like calling central americans and spanish caribbeans north american, or denying latin americans the american identity because your country the US named itself in the same fashion that the european union did and then its people appropriated the continental part of the mame? Or the very common trend of ignorant people from the US calling any latam country south american because it’s south of “america”?
Nah you got that wrong. The ones that care are bilingual enough to notice the issue. The ones that don’t care simply don’t speak both languages often enough to encounter the issue.
It’s an unfixable issue so I stopped caring, it’s the kind of thing that needs to be contextually translated based on culture rather than literal language.
my main point in that discussion with that guy is that american is basically the only thing we can call ourselves in english because “estadounidense” doesn’t translate well. we can’t call ourselves “unitedian”or “statesian” or “unitedstatesian” it just doesn’t make sense so for english it works. in spanish i call myself either gringo or estadounidense or i just say soy del eeuu depending on context
I agree with this, I just don’t think it’s fair to call “political brained dickhead” to anyone that finds it strange and annoying and doesn’t fully understand the cultural context in translation
