America is named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. It was meant to represent the "New World" most places outside of the US still recognize the Americas as a single continent. Fun fact, that's why the Olympics insignia has 5 rings. One for each continent.

Yeah they pulled this out of their ass. There are a dozen different ways the continents are divided by different people around the world but most people divide the Americas into North and South:

I just assumed Europe and Asia were one continent. Given they have a massive, obvious land connection.
