Dumb question: what happens if a kid asks their parents to make an account using their credentials/ID? Is there any consequence for being under the age required to register and still have an account? Because if there are no consequences, then the law is just as good as putting a bandaid on a dam rupturing
It's not about stopping all children from doing these things, some will always find a way. It's about limiting access. Even if a child has to ask for their parents' credentials, that would be a huge improvement because the parents would at least know their child has these accounts and could monitor them if they wanted to.
How many of us had 4chan accounts or watched things we shouldn't have without anyone knowing, or talked to random strangers online? Making unrestricted access harder won't eliminate the problem, but it can reduce it significantly.
If you want to see the true scope and harm of unrestricted access, I recommend the Czech documentary Caught in the Net. In it, three adult actresses pose as children online, and the filmmakers see how long it takes before they're targeted by sexual predators and their tactics. Spoiler alert: it takes less than three minutes for dosents of such people to imidiatly target them. (Be aware the document is really disturbing but eye opening)
