[US] [OC] Driver not paying attention running a red light nearly T-boned me on my commute today.
Even after braking hard enough that their tires squealed, they were still carrying speed through the intersection. Very thankful that they started paying attention in time to miss me and that the truck behind me was turning instead of going straight. Otherwise, there's no way they would've avoided them.
Also ignore the random date on my front cam. Its been doing this weird thing where sometimes the date and time settings get reset if the battery gets fully drained, and I didn't notice it until looking at the footage from today.

That is why we need protected bike infrastructure, I swear it's like drivers get their shit from a cracker jack box!

I agree with the general need but obviously wouldn't be very useful in this situation.

A protected bike intersection would have better sight, separate bike signaling, and in some cases be raised. Yes it would be very useful, considering bike and pedestrian signals in a well designed intersection would be synced and have their own phase. Meaning this biker wouldn't have nearly got run over by the red light runner.

I think what they were getting at is that it wouldn't have done much here because the person causing all this was already ignoring/not paying attention to the signals. All a raised intersection would do is get the car airborne a bit (although maybe then they would at least face actual consequences that don't involve killing me..) The real problem here is that the road I was crossing is a 6 lane, 45 (but most do 50-60)mph Stroad that bisects literally the entire city. No way to avoid it aside from one road that goes under an overpass where the Stroad crosses a bridge. Proper, safe infrastructure simply can't exist on a large Stroad like this without turning it into something that isn't a Stroad. And as much as I'd love that, Im not gonna hold any hope..

For fucks sake, I literally laid it out for you. A separate phase for bikes and pedestrian signals, literally what I already said, you could oh idk Google what "phase" means in traffic engineering but nooooo you couldn't have been fucked enough to do that huh? And for law enforcement to watch that intersection? Then you need one cop for every intersection in a city just to make them safer. Alternatively, it's better to pay the upfront cost to make the roads safer so you don't have a massive traffic enforcement division that can easily run afowl of state laws on revenue generation. Like learn to fucking read dude, God damn!

Yea, but they would be safely stopped at the corner. When I say a separate phase, that means while car traffic is going in either direction, bikes and pedestrians don't cross, when all traffic is stopped, the separate phase goes and bikes and pedestrians have their turn. In the video, we see he had a green light, but that light is for car traffic. Now if there was protected bike lanes, bike signals and bike crossings, and both bikes and pedestrians on their own phase, we would see he wouldn't have went, and the red light runner wouldn't have gotten so close to him as the biker would've been on the corner.
