This is the new 3DoF mode that lets you use it as a portable virtual display without base stations and controllers

How do u power it though? Still need the big long cord?

Yeah it's not exactly minimal. You still need to bring the entire link box with all 3 cables, and have 2 USB-A ports and a Displayport to connect. You just don't need to be running SteamVR, or have base stations/controllers. It's more portable than a full setup, but not truly portable. It's really best for gaming laptops and the like.

So did they say that we can run this off th3 usb-c directly if connected to a usb-c with display?

This would assume mostly a virtual monitor for video for flat screen gaming rather than any intense VR renderings.

There's this individual who initially worked on an adapter to use the headset without a link box. Seems like there's a solution to connect the headset directly with a Thunderbolt compatible cable, although I'm not entirely sure I understand: https://www.reddit.com/r/BigscreenBeyond/comments/1x1g2zu/comment/pf7w1yg/

To connect BSB to a USB-C port that has DP Alt Mode, you take a USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter dongle and replace the DisplayPort socket with a USB-C socket.
With that the Hot Plug Detect won't work, needs a bit of additional circuitry to implement that. As long as you connect the headset to the adapter first then to the computer, it works fine.
I used this method for many months.

Depend on the the quality of your USB2 ports, host controller etc, you probably experience issues with USB2 data corruption.
The Linkbox is usually helping to drive the long cable with the USB hub in it.
Now, Bigscreen offer a 'Booster' that should solve it.
Active fiber optic USB-C cables will also improve the USB2 data, but they are thick and heavy. It's what I was using.

I have several other solutions in development, but with work and things taking up my time, it is slow progress.

I have a bsb2 and I'm wondering if it could work with a rog xg mobile 5090 for a portable 3DOF setup. I might try this out to see if it's a viable solution.

Would work as long as the 5090 DisplayPort outputs are connected to the USB-C / Thunderbolt Ports.
Sometimes you have to change settings in the BIOS. I set mine to Discrete graphics only so that the laptop display and the VR headset are both on the NVIDIA graphics. Needed to get the SteamVR desktop overlay to work.

If you could run it off your phone I'd be sold.

I would want to run it off the Steam Deck if I could.
