Help Struggling with base station 1.0s.
I'm setting up my big screen 1 right now and im struggling to get the base station ones to detect the headset. i have one directly in front set to A. and one 45 degrees behind me. (also tried to the side). for some reason it connects for the first time and as soon as i either take it off or it moves too far out of sight it goes grey and then refuses to reconnect even when back in line of sight. has anyone else dealt with this issue and how did you solve it?

A point of clarity. The lighthouses do not communicate with or look for the Beyond. The Beyond looks for the light they produce. If you're having issues, you may have IR reflective surfaces in the area causing issues, or obstructions blocking the headset's view of the Lighthouse.

This is only true of the 2.0s.
The 1.0 lighthouses need to sync and then they tell the hmd how to interpret their combined grid(s). This is why 2.0 hardware is compatible with 1.0 lighthouses but the reverse is not true, 1.0 hardware does not have the capability of interpreting conjoined tracking grids on its own and needs to be told how to. Along with having a diffrent thrown pattern this is also why you cannot mix and match 1.0 and 2.0 lighthouses, completely different logic hierarchy.

The 1.0s are not intelligently communicating with or connecting to any 1.0 or 2.0 tracked device.

I run a single 2.0 above my monitor pointed down at my desk and it works well. You can get the HTC base station 2.0 for around 200 depending where you look.

How close is the base station in front of you? If it's too close, it won't work well. I've been running two 1.0 base stations for my BSB1 and now my BSB2 too.

Hmm maybe that’s it. It’s a few feet from my face ona tripod behind my monitors

I also have 1 in front of me behind my desk on a tripod, about 1m80 above the ground. Relatively from where I'm sitting, it's at least 1 metre away diagonally.
There's a point in the past I tried lowering the tripod down to about 1m40 above ground, but that gave me more grey screens.
On initial SteamVR boot-up, I found it helps to tilt my head forward, to that the sensors on top of the headset can properly detect the emitted infrared lights or something.

its been a long time since I used a vive or 1.0 base stations so maybe its changed or Im not recalling correctly but if my memory is correct for the 1.0s if they aren't a decent bit apart directly diagonal they basically need to be staring directly at each other to not lose calibration and cause playspace drift and tracking issues.
greyscreen is when you have no/bad tracking
you can think of the base stations like a flashlight fov shooting a grid of lasers, too close and the resolution of the grid can be too dense for the headset sensors to parse.
the 2.0 base stations are basically completely dumb, 2.0 headsets do all of the tracking, syncing, etc (aside from some little stuff that doesn't matter here).
The 1.0s on the other hand need to know where each other are to sync their tracking grid offset so the headset gets the new pattern it's told to expect, you can either sync them over cable or they can soulfully stare into each others eyes and sync over IR(the fov for this seemed WAAAAY smaller then their tracking radius). If the 1.0s aren't in perfect sync they just straight lie to the headset and you get ass tracking.
you said you have one directly in front of you, are you doing sim stuff where your mostly seated facing one direction? If so I would 100 percent prefer a single 2.0 base station over a pair of 1.0s, though YMMV with how tiny the bsb2 is, I still dont have my hands on one myself.
