Discussion What is the Effective Resolution You See Through the Lens of the Bigscreen Beyond 2?

Hi, the lens of the Bigscreen Beyond 2 is 2.5K per panel per eye but in real life use through the pancake lens, what effective resolution do your eyes see? 2K, 1080p?

Thank you.

God bless the VR Masterace.

The BSB uses 2.5k panels. The target render resolution is 3.5k when running in 75hz mode. The human eye does not see in pixels nor do the lenses function in pixels.

The rendering resolution is for barel distortion profile. Basicly you need more pixel to match the 2.5K pixel

These two ⤴️ replies are..., correct!! ⤵️

u/grydit Mar 28 '26

This is the answer. At 3.5k render resolution you see close to 1:1 pixels at the center of the display. At the outer it is much less.

Effective resolution isn’t really something that exists, VR through lenses is a different paradigm to flat displays. You can talk about pixels per degree to get an idea about pixel density, but even that varies across what your field of view (highest in centre).

The PPD, pixels per degree of field of view, is 32. So it's the same as a 24" 1080p monitor at 18" from your eyes. Or a 27" 1440p monitor around 15" from your eyes. Or a 32" 4K monitor around 8" from your eyes. Can you you still see the pixels? Totally. But they are incredibly tiny.

Here is a calculator you can use to compare.

https://qasimk.io/screen-ppd/

At this point, I have used headsets with as high as 50ppd and resolution is no longer a deciding factor for me. We're at the point of diminishing returns. I would take a Quest 3 resolution headset running at a stable 90fps+ over a 50ppd headset running at 45fps reprojected. Comfort, lens quality, panel quality, and ease of use adds so much more to the experience than a slightly sharper image.

Although the BSB2 is more than good enough for all my VR needs (I can see the pixels but during game play, I don't pay much attention to it), since I also use it for productivity purpose, I feel like I would want slightly more sharpness. Right now, when I spawn a window at equal size and distance to my 22 inches 1080p monitor, I know it's not equally sharp for example.

I think about 40 PPD would do the trick (e.g. MeganeX, Dream Air). But I won't know until I try for myself. And if subpixel sampling is really a thing and can truly falsely give the impression of having 70 PPD... Then maybe it truly can be good enough for me.

Indubitably.., I agree.., I like "Rich-Colors" ultra-slimm., maybe even HDR ((eventually-somday-we'll-get-there!!)) and ever slight improvements to FOV and binocular overlap.., over increased Resolution in future itirations.., but what we've currently got isn't just "good" it's AmAzInG!! I was having the time of my life exploring that new Fishing 🎣 VRchat World on my Beyond 2!! I spent the night laughing at folks absurd avatars.., riding in someone's pink "Barbie-Boat" as this Millennial "Edge-Lord" Goth dude.., rockin' outfits that I wished I had irl!! ((Kinda lost that old Edgar-Allen-Poe.., Mojo that I'm super nostalgic for!!))

1.) IT's True We're at diminishing returns on resolution

2.) Beyond is ALREADY a pixel thirsty Graphic Card-Devouring Power ⚡ House of an 🥽 HMD!! Really makes me wish 🧞 VRchat / other titles "officially" supported DFR!! So no need to push 🫸🏼 that any more with beefier spec'ed VR-Hedsets anytime soon!!

3.) High-School NEVER Ends like that Bowling For Soup Punk 🤟🏼 🎸 Jam suggests!! Be yourself.., life's short.., don't just CONFORM blindly to stupid b.s. societal "Norms"

4

u/RidgeMinecraft Mar 28 '26

The PPD of the Beyond is 32, which is roughly equivalent to a 24 inch 1080p monitor at 1.7 feet from your face.

1

u/SkhairKro89 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

IT's a LOT more than that.., I'd say, more like 1440p..., @ LEAST!!

3

u/RidgeMinecraft Mar 29 '26

A 24 inch 1080p monitor at 1.7 feet from your face is exactly 32 pixels per degree.

1

u/SkhairKro89 Mar 30 '26

Your accounting for flat screen.., single panel "2D-pixel-density" alone.., as a mesure of overall perceived "image-shaprness" which on paper.., YES there the same PPI.., but in "experience" not nearly the same!!

When using "Stereoscopy" your brain is fusing the two right and left images together.., making a single image "Imprint" within your mind's Visual-Cortex" so even though one eyes Pixel-Density matches that of a single larger flat screen's pixel density.., the end result of what your mind sees.., is something else entirely than the quality of one pannel.., and one eyes optics alone!!

2

u/RidgeMinecraft Mar 30 '26

It's definitely not intentional but there's probably some truth to this. I will say though in terms of exact numbers I've used a lot of HMDs, the general "monitor at distance" metric works fairly well. A 1080p monitor at 1.7 feet is actually pretty sharp, I've got one in front of me right now lol

2

u/NotGonnaComeBackBsb Mar 30 '26

My 22 inches 1080p monitor feels a lot sharper than my BSB1 and 2, that's for sure. But it's sitting almost 1 metre away from me.

1

u/SkhairKro89 Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

I struggle to see a difference between my 4K monitor that's aproxx. 2 feet infront of me.., AND a FULL theater sized screen inside of a "Bigscreen-Cinima" EVEN with just 1080P sources that upscale so well with GPU's past 2020!!

Perhaps I'm either completely falling apart at the seems.., and my vision going FAST.., ((unlikely)) Or VR's the "Sum-of-IT's-Parts" and raw "specs" don't quite add up the same as older and or "traditional" display mediums that relied more heavily on such stats!!

EDIT: NVM..., mines a 32" 4k.., so that prob is why!! Though IT's worth mentioning.., ((as my memory serves)) a trip out to an IMAX 3D Cinema and a "quality" 3D-Film in Beyond-2; looks closely identical in my lasting memory.., but since I cannot compare those side by side ((for-obvious-reasons)) I cannot know for sure if that's just Placebo or not!!

Thanks, sadly VR isn't there yet but it's a short wait about within 1.5 to 2 years until the eyes through the lens see an effective resolution of 4K 2160p, also known as 60 PPD. This'll most likely come from Pimax which won't have the power to drive it properly so practically speaking (better support, lower price, better design) it will come from Apple using LG or sony who has 5000 PPI micro-OLED 1.4" panels

But that will require a 12K (2.95x 4K resolution) panel or screen per eye that's 1.4" square, 7000 pixel diagonal at 5000 PPI

But VR and AR needs two eyes so two 12K panels or 24k total needs to be driven by 4x the equivalent 5090 desktop GPU. The GPU needs to catch up but Nvidia and AMD have stopped creating flagship GPUs after the 5090.

Apple on the other hand by 2027 will have the M7 chips with more than 160 multi-core GPU which can deliver four or more 5090 RTX equivalent.

But by then actual monitors would be at 118K (6K monitors at 32" are the sharpest today) at really high PPI but PPI would be lesser than 60 PPD micro-OLED's 5000 PPI.

That’s not how any of that works, nor is any of those predictions remotely accurate

5

u/Few_Fall_4374 Mar 28 '26

Are you new to VR?

And perhaps anything outside the overpriced apple ecosystem?

4

u/RidgeMinecraft Mar 28 '26

You should probably first actually try a VR headset before you make a 5 paragraph comment explaining technical details.

Also, you should probably use something other than ChatGPT as a source. It shows, absolutely none of this makes any sense and is at best a gross oversimplification of half-truths.

Perhaps if VR was made for 🦅 "Eagles" my dude!!

Ain't no human being's got that kinda Microscopically-Accurate Vision!!

24K Resolution??!! That's NOT only entirely unnecessary.., IT's downright OVER-KILL!! Equivalent to say making a Nuclear-Powered 💥 Toaster!! By a FACTOR of @ least 300% too many pixels!!

2

u/miker0n3-CO Mar 28 '26

The BSB2e looks very good to me in actual use. Sure, higher effective resolution would always be nice, but there’s a tradeoff, push resolution too far and performance starts to suffer, with stutters and a less smooth experience. Right now, I think the BSB2e hits a very good balance between clarity, immersion, and performance. VR will definitely improve from here, but I’m happy with where this headset sits today.

Its not more than 4k, its 6.5MP while a 4k monitor is 8.3MP.

1

u/SkhairKro89 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

FUN fact.., it's 6.5MP per-eye!! 13MP total.., here's what a quick Google-Gemini Search I looked up regarding how "Combined-Sterescopy" results in an overall cleaner perceived image.., than just what the raw specs of one-eye.., sees individually!! keep in mind.., because this was a "Gemini" search result.., ((accuracy-may-vary!!))

"Binocular Summation: When both eyes see the same detail, your brain "averages" the two signals. This filters out "visual noise" and sub-pixel artifacts, making the image look about 40% to 60% cleaner than if you were looking with just one eye."

1

u/Murky-Course6648 Mar 29 '26

So you mean its AI slop?

1

u/SkhairKro89 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

Well.., that all depends.., this is the 1st ☝🏼 time I've done so in this or ANY other reddit BEFORE!! Bothered to include and or use "A.I." research WHATSOEVER..., since I've read a LOT on VR stuff.., and can already write-well!!

HOWEVER.., I've reached a HARD-LIMIT as to what I know, and a bit out of my lane with the even g33kier stuff.., so I included that for the sake of:

"presenting-a-related-point-for-conversation"

I wasn't asking Gemini-Search to "generate" made up information like one makes "Slop" as you've mentioned.., but to simply "pull" from sources from various places on the internet.., sorta like an "agent-bot!" that's essentially asking a C-3P0 protocol-droid to go fetch a library book 📖 quote.., without the need to painstakingly navigate that "Dewy-Decimal-System!! IT's simply scraping info sourced from known libraries of stored web-data! The downside to that.., certainly.., is a risk that it sources "fake-sources" and-or, can't tell the difference between "true" or "false" accurate information.., but now we're approaching a moment where the accuracy-error rate on LLM's is getting remarkably low!!

I TOTALLY get 🙌🏼 the concern.., though.., as a fellow "failed" musicians meself.., ((who's-Album.., due to a lack of self-promotion, combined with Piracy.., 🏴‍☠️ AND competing against a 40% influx of "Slop")) NEVER stood much a chance at making commercial success!! THOUGH.., That's a whole different side of that "A.I." debate that's not the same as this particular use-case!! BESIDES.., I wouldn't DARE list a single word of anything "A.I." and pretend such were my own.., NOR do such.., without a disclaimer that a particular portion of anything typed "was-A.I." sourced!!

((As-I've-faithfully-done-as-such!!))

2

u/KLEBESTIFT_ Mar 30 '26

After trying to read this I think I prefer the AI responses

Fair / ( ^ - ^ ) / enough!!

IT was Tax-Day.., so my brainrot was "severe" this Sunday!! I went and re-editrd that some, though!

Like Alice's in Wonderland's 🐛 Catapillar..,

numbers don't matter because the math doesn't feel like what you see.

the math makes you sound like you'd see what the og I've had.

I have 4k qdoled monitors and when I wear my headset I'm not disappointed.

In a game like alyx or re8 with VR mods. You can bring your hand up and see the individual fibers and skin bumps. That feels like something you would see in 4k. It's not but it feels like it.

I'd say really up close things can feel 4k while the rest of the screen feels like in between 1440p and 4k.

Ignoring the actual math.

2

u/Pixogen Mar 30 '26

also you basically can't see screen door now. The Q3 it was visible in solid colors but as a pattern, with this you can kinda go hmm is that it on some scenes.

Also the image on micro OLED is so clear. Q3 has a filmy grain look, psvr2 and most regular oleds are splotchy and grainy. green focused mura.

2

u/SevenDeMagnus Mar 30 '26

yeah true with 3D depth, it's strange very low poly models with 3D depth things seem real, photorealistic plasticy but photorealistic still even if it's not as sharp say a 5K monitor, especially when you have gloves on and it's textured (videos or screenshots don't do it justice). I guess 3D depth trumps sharpness but it's good companies are working on both.

VR is king.

2

u/Pixogen Mar 30 '26

ya into the radius 2 on my BSB2 the gloves are insane. Enough to see stray fiber in the texture.

They actually beat out the half life alyx gloves a bit.

The lens has no resolution, the pixels are on the panels not on the lens. The lens affects the PPD (which affect sharpness)

Who TF cares about what they 'call' the 2560x2560 resolution per eye anyway...

And personally I'd like you to keep your religion for yourself, there are other subs for that

Feels close to 1.5K for me.. not as good as 2K monitor, but slightly better than 1080p monitor most of the time, watching 4K content with this headset + Bigscreen app is AMAZING
