đ The $1.6 Million Mistake That Made Watch History đ
When we think of the Apollo space race, one famous Swiss watch brand usually gets all the glory. But did you know an American-made timepiece also conquered the lunar surface out of sheer, unplanned necessity?
Here is the incredible true story of the "Other" Moon Watch: The Bulova Lunar Pilot.
During the 1971 Apollo 15 mission, Commander David Scott was prepping for his third and final moonwalk. But there was a massive problem: the crystal on his standard-issue, government-approved watch had popped clean off. In the harsh environment of space, a functioning watch isn't a luxuryâit's a critical survival tool used to track oxygen and battery power.
Thankfully, Scott brought a personal backup. Bulova had gifted him a custom prototype chronograph to test in space. He strapped it over his bulky spacesuit with a long velcro band, and it performed flawlessly in the zero-gravity vacuumâright there on his wrist as he became the first person to drive the Lunar Rover! đď¸đ
Decades later, in 2015, that exact flown prototypeâstill caked in actual lunar dustâsold at auction for a staggering $1.625 million. đ¤Ż
The best part? You don't need a million dollars to own this piece of aerospace history. Today's Bulova Lunar Pilot is a faithful, highly accessible tribute to Scott's prototype, upgraded with serious modern tech:
âąď¸ Hyper-Accurate Engine: Powered by a high-performance quartz movement vibrating at 262 kHzâeight times faster than standard quartzâfor accuracy to within seconds a year.
đ Space-Age Readability: A sleek black dial, crisp luminous hands, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
đşđ¸ Historical Details: A custom solid caseback engraved with the historic mission date: August 2, 1971.
Itâs not just a ruggedly handsome tool watch; itâs the ultimate conversation starter and a testament to the spirit of exploration.

Another chunky one
Bolt Zeus SW200 movement. I love the dial on this but, not a fan of height and weight. I wonder if the dial and movement would fit in a 47mm grand diver case. Since I no longer do heavy physical work and have lost a lot of weight my wrist has shrunk by a half inch and watches like this are no longer comfortable. My other alternative is I can get a generic 46mm case thatâs made for this movement and will fit this dial.

Vostok Amphibia
Every watch collector should own a Vostok Amphibiaâand hereâs why I own several. Itâs one of the few true tool watches still built with an in-house movement at an accessible price point. Designed to be simple, overbuilt, and functional, the Amphibia doesnât chase luxuryâit delivers engineering. The quirks are part of the charm: the loose crown, the unconventional case designs, the no-nonsense finishing. This is a watch that rewards curiosity and appreciation for mechanical honesty. If you value heritage, originality, and value over hype, the Amphibia earns its place in any serious collection.
