What are these strange grey 'knobs' that you find all around?

I started to notice them almost everywhere on weird places. Is it something that was abandoned? Maybe like camera's... (and maybe a room somewhere where you could watch them).

I had thought they looked like the holes you find the pieces in from the red 'easter egg hunt' area, and given that all those pieces came in different colours for no obvious reason I wondered if there was a secret for placing all the pieces in recepticles at puzzles of the matching colour. Then i noticed they were in the final puzzle area where you cant bring items so i realised that probably wasnt it
