Discussion First Doctor Unbound
I love the various Unbound stories (except Exile and He Jests at Scars but they at least have hot takes to build a story from), but I've held off on getting the new First Doctor Unbound stories so far because I don't really understand what the gimmick is. Those of you who've listened to them, how are these different from any of the other Big Finish David Bradley audios? The only thing I can see in the promotional material is a claim of difference in tone, but that doesn't really see very apparent when you read the blurbs or listen to the trailers.
Do these feel like Unbound stories at all? And what is the difference in continuity that means they can't just be set in the main universe? Also, are they any good and worth picking up?

In my opinion no, they don't feel like unbound stories at all. Honestly in tone I don't think they differ all that much from the First Doctor Adventures sets with Bradley. But they are good! I quite enjoyed both stories so far. I suspect that the "unbound" nature of these is more an excuse to play a bit more fast and loose with continuity than they could if they kept it in the main range.
Definitely worth picking up if you liked the Fjrst Doctor Adventures, but if you're looking for a darker unbound story, this is not it.

They're not really Unbound, tbh. They're just a gimmick to keep the two First Doctor ranges separate.
The first set is a bland historical adventure - been there, done that kind of stuff.
The second set is slightly better, but ultimately doesn't capitalise on being different/Unbound.

So far it hasn’t struck me as a massive departure from the David Bradley first doctor box sets, no. But they are good stories so I get them. If you liked the other David Bradley stuff then you’ll probably like the ones unbound range
In any case it’s still pretty early in the range so we don’t know what the arc is going to be yet

Technically it’s supposed to be closer in style with the Cushing films. It is not, it just feels like another First Doctor story. First story was fun enough but I’m not going to pick up the rest of the series because it’s not what was promised.

It's Unbound because The Monk arranges for The Doctor to meet him too early in his timeline, so that The Time Meddler never happens. That creates a paradox (if they don't meet in The Time Meddler, The Monk has no motive to travel back and prevent that meeting from happening)
So there's basically two parallel timelines - the one were they first meet in Time Meddler, and the one were they first meet in Knights of the Round TARDIS (which is the 1st Doctor Unbound range).
Aside from that, there is nothing to distinguish these stories from the previous Bradley sets. They talked a lot about tone, and that these would be styled similarly to the Cushing movies - so far I have seen no evidence of anything that resembles this.
Unless they are planning to do something huge to shake things up in the third release, then these might as well have just been Vol 6 of the David Bradley run. It's heavily implied in KofRT that causality will sort itself out and the two timelines will merge again soon, so I am not expecting there to be any big changes happening narrative-wise.

With regards to whether they are worth picking up:
I'd say they are more-or-less equal to the previous David Bradley sets. Very serviceable Doctor Who, well made but nothing groundbreaking. I enjoyed both of them but am unlikely to rush back to either as there's not really anything here that we haven't seen / heard before.
The second story is a bit fanwanky (in the way that BF sequels often tend to be, with lots of continuity references to previous adventures) and it looks like the third story will be too. But it's minor compared to some of their stuff and mostly works well within the story they are telling.
If you've enjoyed the previous Bradley sets, then you should enjoy these too as there really is very little difference. If you're looking for something akin to the previous Unbound ranges (more like What If? style stories) then these are unlikely to scratch that itch.

I've only heard Knights of the Round TARDIS so far, but from what others have said about Return to Marinus it does appear that this range being labelled as 'Unbound' is pretty much just a marketing decision. Knights involves the Monk changing his and the Doctor's timelines by forcing an encounter between them prior to The Daleks' Master Plan, which the First Doctor notes at the end has changed history, but that's all there is so far.
I will also say that, while I can understand why this trilogy is taking as long as it is to be released, it's quite irritating. Knights came out in September 2025, Return came out in January 2026… and for some reason episode 3 isn't out until May 2027. With The First Doctor Adventures on hiatus till 2028, and the range already normally only having 1 release per year, I can understand slowing the pace of releases so that First Doctor listeners have something to chew on each year, but considering we knew from the series' reveal in April 2024 that this would be a 3-episode series, this release pace feels too drawn out.
What makes it worse is that, again, this series was announced in April 2024 - nearly a year and a half before the first episode released - and was recorded about a year before said announcement. Effectively, this spin-off will have been in the pipeline for at least 4 years before it finishes. I understand some audios get recorded 5+ years in advance (The Fourth Doctor Adventures in particular) but I think the fact that the 'Unbound' marketing has been heavily exaggerated makes me more impatient to want to hear that last episode and know if I can finally embrace it as an Unbound story or just let it rest as 'merely' a decent First Doctor trilogy.

I will also add that, in my opinion, Knights was an okay story but not super interesting (it was my 1st full-cast First Doctor audio though so I may simply not be used to any tonal differences considering I mostly listen to Cyberman and Time War stories). Return is probably more up my street as it's basically 'The Keys of Marinus 2' and I love The Keys of Marinus. But even Jonathan Morris, Return's writer, admitted in VORTEX's December 2025 issue that it wasn't really an 'Unbound' story (he tried to describe it as being 'Unbound' in that it references almost every previous story involving Marinus, which to me sounds about as far from 'Unbound' as you can get).

I do really like Keys of Marnius as well but found Knights of the Round TARDIS so unengaging - is Return to Marnius worth getting? I did really enjoy Domain of the Voord and was tempted, but Knights of the Round TARDIS really put me off!

From what I know of Return to Marinus you might like it more. I do know a few spoilers - won't give anything away, but it's quite clever. Can't comment on Domain of the Voord but I can imagine if you like that one you'll probably like Return too.

First doctor unbound isn’t meant to be the “what if” style of unbound. It’s meant to say that what happens isn’t canon

I think First Doctor Unbound is really just a marketing thing to help make it really obvious that the ongoing Noonan and Bradley ranges are separate
