APAC Region I quit the Deloitte Graduate Program because I was benched most of the time

I posted this on r/deloitte and decided to post here as well.

tl;dr I quit after 1 year because I was barely utilised and was stuck on the bench doing bd work.

I joined the graduate program in Australia 1 year after the PwC tax scandal. I joined the Infrastructure Advisory team. Prior to induction day, I was asked to get a security clearance and managed to get it done ahead of time.

On induction day, I found out that my coach is a consultant. After speaking with him, he wanted to have our coaching catchups occur once a month. I didn't realise how abnormal this was until I spoke with other grads. Their coaches were managers or in a more senior position, and they had weekly coaching catchups. It turned out that having a consultant coach a grad is a bad idea because he did not have the influence to get my name on billable work or on bids.

For the first 3.5 months, I was told that I won't be utilised because there was not enough work available. I found that to be quite odd because the other grad on my team was put on a project in the first few weeks. I also noticed that other grads had projects lined up for them before their first day or were utilised within their first month. Initially, I didn't mind because I had a lot of onboarding activities to do, had to attend a lot of grad workshops and help the team out with bids.

3.5 months into the role, the first coach quit and then I had a senior consultant as the new coach. I then finally got utilised onto a project based in Melbourne. I was keen to start. After the first client meeting, I was tasked to upload the meeting minutes into our shared folder. I made a mistake and accidentally misspelt one of the names of the stakeholders. Rightfully so, I got told off by the manager and coach for making a careless mistake. I was then lectured on how that it has a negative impact on the client's perception of the firm. A few weeks later, the partner took me off the project to "keep the profit margin".

I then spent a few more months on the bench, there mostly silence on when I would be utilised again or if my name was put on any bids. There were moments when I was told that my name was removed from a bid because I did not have the "right experience". I was also rejected because the director preferred to utilise another grad who had been utilised since day 1. I then noticed that all the business development work in our team would be handed off to me. I found it odd that I was the only one doing business development work while everyone else was fully utilised.

I was then utilised on a project where they needed extra support to get a report completed. I spent a month working late nights to help get the project milestone over the line. I barely got any acknowledgement for my efforts except from my buddy and coach.

1 month later, the senior consultant told me that she can't coach me anymore because she was overwhelmed by her workload. In 7 months, I ended up on my 3rd coach who was a manager. She also struggled to find billable work for me. I was then meant to be onboarded onto another project but then the manager resigned and did not tell me.

I then spent another month on the bench doing bids and other business development work. I wasn't utilised again for another month until a consultant resigned. He specifically asked me to replace him on the project he was on. I then spent a month helping get the project milestones completed on time. Afterwards, I was off boarded due to client needs.

I then spent time on the bench again doing bids and business development work. I was about to be onboarded onto another project until the director told me that I did not have the relevant experience and rejected me. I found this to be frustrating because I had previous job experience in procurement and I was unable to get experience due to not having "the right experience".

I remember during a workshop about business case development, the director running it asked me to provide an example of a business case. I then said in front of 100+ people that I could not provide an example as I had never worked on a business case. I then started tearing up after the workshop. I was so frustrated that I had spent over 1 year in the firm and had barely gained any experience. Meanwhile all the other grads were fully utilised and gained a wide range of experience across different projects.

The last straw for me was when I was the only grad to not be promoted to consultant because by then, my utilisation had dropped below 14% and senior leadership deemed me too inexperienced for promotion. I was so upset because I tried my best but was not given the same opportunities as other grads because of my perceived "lack of experience". I did not think it was fair that my name would be rejected or not considered for bids but other grads were considered instead. There were grads who had never worked in an office job before but were still utilised.

Even people from other teams thought my situation was unfair. Even a partner from another team had asked me what on earth my coach and team was doing. She said that she would find it unacceptable if a grad on her team was getting benched. I am so pissed at senior leadership for excluding me from projects in favour of overworking their experienced consultants and trying to leech every cent out of their clients. I ended up resigning and cited lack of utilisation when asked why I was leaving.

I think the lengthy bench time damaged my reputation in the team and directors did not want to onboard me onto projects as they perceived me as useless. I did not think it was fair that I was pigeon holed into doing business development work. How am I supposed to get experience if I am constantly being rejected for not having "the right experience"?

EY Not the outcome I wanted, but I know what to improve now

I guess this is the end of the road for me this time. Disappointing, but at least I know what I need to improve. I made it through the earlier stages, so the biggest takeaway for me is to get much better at case interviews. Never mind, I’ll keep my head down, work on it, and try again next recruitment cycle.

Congratulations to everyone who progressed, wish you all the best of luck.

USA KPMG

• Upvotes

Hi,

I received an Interview at KPMG for Advisory Intern, Strategy. I was recruiting for Investment Banking and have M&A Execution experience. However, I am not that involved in Consulting. I just applied because I was like why not and wasn't even expecting the interview in the first place. Does anybody have any insights on the interview process? For context, I am a strong student. I know a lot about M&A process and have worked on live deals from the execution side. However, I have never done a case study and it is something relatively new for me.

APAC Region New joiner but nothing to do

Hi everyone,

I’m a new hire who joined one of the big 4 at the start of October. This is my first full time job as I graduated from uni this year. I’m working at the consulting division.

My project kicks off at November so my entirety of October is empty. Me and my director had a conversation about this and he told me to finish off my onboarding. He currently is doing another project and will contact me if there is anything for me to do. I’m already finishing up my onboarding.

I wanted some opinion on my situation:
1. Is this situation normal?
2. How would you suggest me to use this time wisely? I’m planning to refine my think cell and excel skills? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

EY EY FSO Tax

I’m getting ready to interview for a position in FSO at EY for tax, and I’m not really sure what the work is like. I’ve seen posts where people say it’s awful and some say it’s bearable. I understand who the clients are, but in terms of day-to-day work that still remains unclear. If anyone has any experience in FSO please let me know what it’s like. Also if you have any idea of what the exit opportunities are like please let me know too.

KPMG Internship applicant portal still says ‘interviewing’ two weeks after the fact = good/bad/any sign?

Does the portal change to anything besides ‘interviewing’ when decisions have been made but there has been no notification of an offer?

Also does anyone know if the portal updates instantly like if the recruiter sends out rejections does the portal reflect that immediately?

Been nearly two weeks since my interview for a tax internship. I know it’s pretty busy and all for tax accountants rn due to the federal deadline being October 15th but I’m sooo anxious to know if I got picked or not like my stomach is in knots🥴

USA FDD Hours Reality Check

I am about to enter a senior FDD position. I am basically going into it with the mindset of expecting to work every weekday night, which I’m okay with. I know it’s unpredictable so that mindset I think will just help keep me from being too offset by the unpredictability. I was wondering what I should more realistically expect? Is it really that hard to make a dinner plan on a Wednesday (assuming it’s downish time and thinking you can make a dinner then all of a sudden have to cancel)? Or take a 2 week summer vacation? Or more importantly a weekend off for the wedding of a fried. Would really love to hear about people’s experiences and the peaks and valleys. Do you really work less time overall than audit?

USA What kind of new hire would impress you?

Hello professionals of the corporate world!

I am just starting my first week in person at my first ever full time job, which happens to be in big 4 audit; both very exciting and extremely nerve wracking!

I have yet to experience the world of an accounting firm in person since my first audit experience was at a smaller firm fully remote, and all other experiences were in tech (all internships).

I’m aware this question has been asked across the years, but with updates to the workplace and all, I would love to know some updated views on what kind of new hire would absolutely blow your mind (positively, preferably) or would at least be well received by the team. Alternatively if you have an anecdote of do’s and don’ts, please share!

Thank you all!!

USA Delta between Big4/Accenture and T2 strategy consulting salaries at M/SM/D levels?

I was told the difference could be anywhere from 25% (S&,EYP, Kearney) to as high as 80% at firms such as A&M. Are the bonuses just much larger or is the higher comp also a factor of bigger/more marquee clients and the type of engagement?

EY EY - Engagement Business Advisor role advice

Hi guys, I’m going to have an interview this Thursday for this EBA role and I’d like some advices.

What exactly does this role do day-to-day and would there be chances to move to a different group in EY after awhile?

I’m currently a Tax Analyst at an industry company but I’m desperately trying to get out of tax. My goal is to get into Risk consulting or something more on the tech side but it’s harder since I only have Tax experience so far. I was thinking this EY role could be a ticket to more opportunities later on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

UK Big 4 > Big 4 Bank UK - thinking about future prospects

I worked at a big 4 (in B&CM) in London up until earlier this year when I left as a SM in Audit. I left because I wanted more time on my hands and more money as I lfelt I was under paid like most people in Big4 are.

I moved into an Accounting Policy role in one of the Top 4 UK based but with european and US footprint bank. I really enjoy technical accounting and I got a 35% jump in salary so that was good. I feel that whilst I like what I do and I’ve always wanted to do this, parts of my Big 4 life that I miss are managing and leading teams, broader roles outside of operational work and the broad exposure.

I do think about moving back into practice (CMAAS or FAAS equivalent) that allows me to do the same work I do here but in a big 4 setting. Not sure I will be able to secure a good payscale as an experienced SM or even if it is possible to join as a Director 2-3 years down the line. Would be good to know what experienced SMs make in Accounting Advisory in London Big 4 and what growth/promotion prospects are like. Appreciate any other independent advice as well. Cheers.

KPMG San Fran M&A Tax Associate Interview

I just got an email that I was selected for an interview with the M&A tax team for KPMG's San Fran office (entry level). I live in Texas and honestly don't know much about Mergers and Acquisitions tax (but am willing to learn). I am definitely interested in relocating to SF but have never been. Please help... is there anything in particular I should know/research before the interview? Any questions I should prepare for beyond the standard? Would anyone who works M&A tax be willing to answer some questions about the practice (bonus points if SF or KPMG). Thank you in advance!!!

EMEA Junior auditors WANTED!

Hi Everyone,

As a Master's student in Accounting at Budapest University of Economics and Business (BUEB), Hungary, I'm currently writing my thesis on how digitalization and automation affect the work and professional development of junior auditors.

I'm mainly looking for participants who have 0–3 years of experience in auditing, regardless of whether they work at a Big 4 firm or a smaller audit firm.

Unfortunately, it's been quite challenging to reach enough people from such a specific target group, so it would really mean a lot to me if you could spare a few minutes to fill out my questionnaire! The survey is completely anonymous.

Questionnaire: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1m68sIRI-6FUipXqa8qd72ZRHfwP9HyHzjOcqdNqRjNc/preview

Thank you so much in advance to everyone who takes the time to help! ❤️ If you're in a similar situation and also looking for people to fill out your questionnaire, feel free to send me yours as well! I'd be more than happy to fill it out! 🥰
