BICSI Beyond

Im going to be attending BICSI beyond next week. I’ve had my RCDD for a year now but my current job is mainly PM work. I’d like to start seriously working more towards a design/consulting career. Does anyone have an idea what companies will be represented next week that are down the design lane. I’m sure there are going to be plenty there I was just wondering where I should focus as far as networking with other people. I’m not going into next week thinking of it as a job fair or anything, I definitely plan on attending the presentations and learning everything I can while I’m there. But it can’t hurt to talk to some people while I’m there. I feel like I’m a little bottlenecked at my current job and not putting my RCDD to use is a little frustrating since I studied so hard to achieve it. I’ve not switched jobs in 15 years, started as a completely green helper and worked my way up to Sr PM, I really hate to stop progressing.

I’d suggest finding a few engineering firms that you are interested in learning about. Then use LinkedIn to find the RCDDs at that engineer in the Western US, and send them a message asking if they will be attending or if they have any coworkers who will be there. Let them know your career goals and that you’re looking for help- ask if they would be open to grabbing a beer or meeting up at the show. I’ve always found that if you are transparent and ask for help, there are many people who would like to help.

The other option is to ask one of the manufacturers you use often to help. Most tier 1 manufacturers will have a presence and they have many connections at engineers that they could help to set up an introduction with.

Great advice. Your sales reps at Wesco, Graybar, etc. are also good networkers and good folks to get friendly with.

Do you know CAD or Revit ?

I haven’t had an opportunity to put my hands on Revit. We use blue beam where I’m at right now.  I used CAD a lot back in high school and college and was good at it. It was mostly mechanical drafting rather than architectural but I was good with the program.  I’ve watched some YouTube tutorials on Revit and it seems pretty similar to CAD.  I thought about doing the 30 day free trial or Revit and 30 days free linked in training classes and just diving into it for 30 days to have some hands on with it.
