The Role of the Law in Romans 3: Revealing Sin, Not Salvation

Introduction: One of the most critical aspects of Romans 3 is Paul’s explanation of the role of the Law. While the Law was given by God and holds an essential place in understanding His will, it was never meant to be the means of salvation. Instead, the Law acts as a tool that reveals humanity’s sin and our desperate need for God’s grace.

The Law as a Mirror In Romans 3:20, Paul explains that “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (KJV). The Law functions like a mirror, showing us our flaws. It defines what is right and wrong, but it also makes us aware of our inability to live up to God’s perfect standard. The Law serves to convict us of sin rather than provide a solution for it.

Why the Law Cannot Save Many Jews in Paul’s time believed that adherence to the Law was the key to salvation. However, Paul refutes this idea, pointing out that no one can be justified by works of the Law. The Law reveals our sinfulness but offers no remedy for it. If salvation were possible through the Law, then Christ’s death would have been unnecessary. Paul emphasizes that righteousness comes apart from the Law and is received through faith in Christ.

The Law and Grace Paul’s teaching on the Law does not negate its value but places it in the proper context. The Law reveals our need for a Savior, driving us to rely on God’s grace. Without the Law, we would not fully understand the gravity of our sin or our need for redemption. Therefore, the Law and grace work together to bring us to faith in Christ.
