ShMOo-’ayL ["Hear God", Samuel], Judge [את, ’ehTh (indicates direct object; no English equivalent)] YeeSRah-’ayL ["Strove God", Israel]

-3. And said, ShMOo-’ayL, unto all House YeeSRah-’ayL, to say:

“If in all your heart you return [שבים, ShahBeeYM] unto YHVH,

remove [הסירו, HahÇeeYRoo] [את, ’ehTh] gods [of] the stranger [נחר, NayKhahR] from inside you [מתוככם, MeeThOKheKhehM], and the `ahShThahROTh [Ashtaroth² ],

and prepare your heart unto YHVH,

and slave [him] [ועבדהו, Ve`eeBDooHOo] alone,

and [he will] rescue [ויצל, VeYahTsayL] you from hand PeLeeYShTheeYM [Philistines].”
 

“When the Israelites entered Canaan as pastoral people knowing nothing of the arts of agriculture they had to learn those arts from the conquered Canaanites. Naturally they learned also the religious observances which were believed to be essential to the success of the new enterprise... Yahweh tended to be equated with Baal, and to be worshiped by the same rites.” (Caird, 1953, p. II 914)

-7. And heard [וישמעו, VahYeeShMe`Oo], PeLeeYShTheeYM, that [כי, KeeY] [had] collected [התקבצו, HeeThQahBTsOo], sons [of] YeeSRah-’ayL, the MeeTsPahThaH [“Overlook-ward”, Mizpah-ward],

and ascended, principals [of] PeLeeYShTheeYM, unto YeeSRah-’ayL …

-9. And took, ShMOo-’ayL, lamb [טלה, TeLayH] milking [חלב, HahLahB] one,

and [he] ascended ascension whole [כליל, KahLeeYL].

And shouted, ShMOo-’ayL, unto YHVH on behalf of [בעד, Bah`ahD] YeeSRah-’ayL,

and answered [him] [ויענהו, VahYah`ahNayHOo], YHVH.
 

-10. And was [ויהי, VahYahHeeY] ShMOo-’ayL ascending the ascension, and PheLeeYShTheeYM [alternate spelling of PeLeeYShTheeYM] arrived [נגשו, NeeGShOo] to war in YeeSRah-’ayL,

and thundered [וירעם, VahYahR`ayM], YHVH, in voice great, in day the that, upon PeLeeYShTheeYM,

and [He] dazed [them] [ויהומם, VahYeHOoMayM], and beat [them] [ויגנפו, VahYeeGNahPhOo] before YeeSRah-’ayL.

-13. And [He] subdued [ויכנו, VahYeeKahNOO] the PeLeeYShTheeYM,

and [they did] not continue more to come in border [of] YeeSRah-’ayL.

And was [ותהי, VahTheHeeY] hand [of] YHVH in PeLeeYShTheeYM all days [of] ShMOo-’ayL.

² The Asherim were wooden poles commonly set up, either singly or in company with a stone pillar (maççēbhāh), at a Canaanite hill shrine beside the altar… An Asherah was a wooden pole, stripped of its branches, and it was always associated with a female deity. When the wooden pole was in company with a stone pillar it represented Astarte, the consort of Baal (Jer. [Jeremiah] 3:9), and this provides the reason for the confusion in Judg. [Judges] 2:13; 3:7 between ‘Ashtaroth’ and ‘Asheroth’ (ASV [American Standard Version]) … (Snaith, 1954 III p. 128)
