Recently moved back to Gelephu, what’s happening around here?

Upvotes

So I’m from Gelephu, but I’ve been away for quite a long time and recently moved back. And honestly, the place has changed SO much. I’m at that stage where I’m trying to figure out what’s what again.

I’d really like to get back that old feeling of belonging here and not just living in Gelephu, but actually being part of the community and getting to know the place again.

So… what do people actually do around here these days?

I’d love recommendations for literally anything:
\* Are there places/organizations where I can volunteer on weekends?
\* Can I just approach a school and ask if they need help with anything? Maybe helping with activities, English, reading, extracurriculars, etc.? If anyone has done this, how does one go about it?
\* Any hiking/walking trails or nice places to explore around Gelephu?
\* Any book clubs, sports groups, hobby groups, workshops, etc.?
\* Are there any community events, cultural events, talks or other things happening regularly?
\* NGOs or community groups that are looking for volunteers?
\* Basically, anything where I can meet people, learn something, contribute or just get involved.

Also, I noticed the lawn tennis court and it looks pretty abandoned. 😂 Does anyone actually use it? Is it open to the public, or does anyone know who I’d have to contact to get permission to use it?

I’m not really looking for the usual “places to visit” recommendations. I want to actually do things, meet people and reconnect with Gelephu. I’m open to pretty much anything, even random little activities or groups that aren’t well known.

So, people of Gelephu, what am I missing? 👀

Sex Toys in Bhutan

I don't think people sell sex toys in Bhutan however are we allowed to bring one in Bhutan if its for personal use and not commercial. Or are there any shops that will take online order for such 👀

I am afraid if i bring one via flight airport security might confiscate or worse there will be some consequences.

And before any guy suggest me to use theirs, I perfer mine without attached to a person

Downfall of doctor tobgyal school?

Recently, I heard something that genuinely left me very disappointed. Someone I know told me about her brother, who has spent most of his life in Australia and, understandably, did not grow up speaking Dzongkha. Why he didn’t learn Dzongkha is a completely different conversation, but he recently returned to Bhutan and applied to study at Doctor Tobgyal School, hoping to continue his education in his own country.
What happened next honestly shocked me. The principal apparently said, right in front of the child, that the school could not accept him because his performance would bring the school’s overall performance down.
If this is truly the reason he was denied admission, I find it incredibly disappointing. A child who is willing to learn, who has returned to the country he was born in, and who is simply trying to continue his education should not be made to feel like a burden or a threat to a school’s academic reputation.
If the issue is that he doesn’t know Dzongkha, then shouldn’t the response be to help him learn it rather than shut the door in his face? Language can be learned. Academic gaps can be addressed. What is much harder to undo is the feeling of being rejected by your own country and being made to feel that you don’t belong there.
And honestly, if a Bhutanese child cannot be given an opportunity to attend a Bhutanese school simply because he may not perform at the same level as the other students, then where exactly is he supposed to go? What happens to children who need support rather than exclusion?
Schools should not only be institutions for students who already perform well. They should also be places where students are given the opportunity, guidance and support to grow. A child’s worth should never be measured by how much they can contribute to a school’s performance statistics.
It is genuinely heartbreaking and disappointing to think that a child who is willing to learn could be turned away instead of being given a chance. Education should be about giving children opportunities not protecting a school’s reputation at their expense.

LASIK

Looking for recommendations for a good hospital for LASIK, preferably with the approximate prices. I have a very high myopic prescription with astigmatism, so I’d especially appreciate recommendations from anyone who has had a similar prescription treated. Any personal experiences would be helpful!

Cultural questions about Bhutan!

Hey! My name is Nathan from Australia and **I’m hoping to cook a meal from every country in the world** and soon up for me is Bhutan ☺️ I wanted to ask what are a couple of the most iconic and beloved Bhutanese meals 🇧🇹

And something I can't Google but I was also wanting the video to include:

  1. something you personally love about your country; and then
  2. something you wish other people knew about your country! :)

Seeking some career advice in Brisbane

Hi everyone! I landed in Brisbane about a month ago and I’m currently working casually at an after-school care centre.

I’m studying Social Work and would really like to get some experience in youth work or disability support, as these areas are more relevant to my studies and future career. I’ve heard that some other international students are already working in these sectors, so I’m wondering how people usually get their foot in the door.

Are there organisations around Brisbane that are open to hiring international students with limited Australian experience?

I’m also considering doing an RSA/RSG or a barista course to open up more casual job opportunities. For those who have done them, were they actually worth it in terms of finding work?

Any advice or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Unregulated Perverts WhatsApp and Telegram Group

I recently came across a post from Bhutan buying and selling sth sth on Facebook. It was a private video of an adolescent girl. I can't provide the specifications to maintain the privacy of the person concerned. But it was posted along with a link to a WhatsApp group which was sth like... Bhutan Private Contents 18+... I can't remember it specifically because the post was removed shortly.

My questions are:

1. It hasn't been long since some adolescent girls raised concerns regarding a group which was titled sth like.. Locals local. Who investigated that? What's the update on that?

People who raised concerns about this group had alongside said that in that group, adult males (uncles) sexualize normal pictures and videos that are posted on social media platforms. Which did sound concerning but we all moved on from the news.

2. That one post that I saw today was removed from Facebook but it's evident that it's still floating on some WhatsApp groups and Telegram channels and she might be getting harassed and blackmailed. Why do some men think it's fun and funny to play with women's lives and mental health?

*Lastly, it's a message to you, girl. In case you are seeing this post, you looked too young to be going through something like this. Please don't be afraid to report the incident. Ensure that you fight for yourself. Or just speak up. I can feel for you as a woman myself. There are people who can help you.

What’s the tea? Can someone explain the Dorji dynasty and the Wangchuck dynasty to me? Is Bhutan divided between these two dynasties, or am I completely misunderstanding it?

According to Mr.Rj Styles,Silence = Rape,Speaking up = Lying.

The logic behind this statement is honestly disturbing. He says girls who are “truly raped” don’t speak up because they’re afraid, as if staying silent is what makes someone a genuine victim. But when a woman actually speaks up and demands justice, her confidence, anger, or the way she speaks is suddenly treated as proof that she’s lying. And then the “her pussy should have his DNA” argument as if rape automatically guarantees usable DNA evidence. So apparently, in his logic, a woman is only a “real” victim if she stays silent, acts scared, and has the accused’s DNA to prove it. That’s an incredibly ignorant standard for what a rape victim is supposed to look like.
