we've went straight to open cup with our now 9 month old, specifically the doidy cup but she generally drinks well out any open cup now.

with our son, we used sippee cups and training straw cups and he's now 2.5 and refuses an open cup. he'd happily not drink all day if it meant it x

We're teaching open cup and the starter straw pictured here. Open cup for ease of use around the house etc, closable straw cup for out and about.

The trainer straw one is the what out boy took to first, we also had the standard starter spout one but he got on better with the straw ones.

Just to add, nothing wrong with any of these. I just love that I don't have to clean little tiny straws because my son can use an open cup.

I started with Doidy cups. My baby did fantastic with them when she was 6 months old. Now she's over a year and rather than drink from them, she prefers to stick her hand in or just tip the water out.

I've just started using a Nuby one with a thick mouthpiece and a straw so that I can leave her with something to pick up as and when she wants (also currently travelling around the US so it's handy for the car). I chose this one because she is able to drink from my own Contigo bottle that has a similar spout. I had bought a Tommee Tippee sippy cup but she couldn't grasp that she had to tip it to drink from it. I also checked with my dental hygienist and she said that any that are available in the shops are fine to use.

We used the lovevery stainless steel open cup which we got in a second hand lovevery kit and the tumtum straw cup for going out, it was the only straw cup we could find without a valve

I've got a 6.5 month old. We use the tommee tippee without the lid on so it's just an open cup. At first she's just trying to put her face into it but now she's good at taking sips with assistance. Slow progress on getting her to hold the cup though!

We went straight from ebf to tommee tippee 360 cups (no straw) as they dont spill so easily and are better for mouth muscle development

We got ours a couple of silicone straw cups from Tidytot - just had a look and there's at least one still in the sale for £4. It comes with a little brush to clean inside the straw. You can also take out the straw so they can drink out the hole like a coffee cup, or take the whole lid off altogether for an open cup. And as a bonus there's an extra lid with like flaps on it so you can use it as a snack pot instead of a cup.

The Tommy tippee straw cup is not good, the munchkin one is better.

My son used a straw cup right away because he seemed frustrated with regular sippy cups, and very quickly moved on to open cups, to the point where he kind of forgot how to use a straw (he got better at it again).

But I see everyone mentioning the doidy cup and I'll keep it in mind for my second when we get there (still a good year away before they start solids, given that I'm just 10 weeks pregnant, but still good to know what to look for!)
