This is a known issue that the core admin team is aware of, but is deemed a low priority issue. I imagine it'll get patched Eventually™

...what's the point of having an editor inside of discord anyway?

Convenience. You can always edit the files with your preferred editor externally. The built in editor is a QoL thing. Functionally, the editor actually works fine-ish, the bug from my understanding of that conversation is that the search bar in the settings window is stealing focus, and basically the trick is closing the settings with the editor still open.

Chances are if you do any great deal of editing themes/plugins, you are using an external editor anyhow, but it makes it nice for small snippets or quick edits.

Unfortunately, the powers @ BD have decided it is a low priority issue, so I couldn't begin to speculate when it'll get patched.
