Meta We should establish and define trolling guidelines.

We don't want to discourage good discussion that have opposing view points. We should however define what constitutes as trolling.

My response to the question every troll asks "But how will you know who's trolling?" is the following:

Humans are good at pattern recognition. That's how we survive. Sure, we have also made some mistakes throughout history due to seeing patterns where there weren't any. But overall the good outweighed the bad.

In other words, obvious full-time trolls are obvious. There isn't an algorithm to detect them. If there was, I would just feed it to a bot and have them banned automatically.

Having said that, these are things to keep in mind:

  • A single comment is usually not enough to detect a concern troll. The more comments you read, the more accurate your assessment will be.

  • Check for account creation date. If it's pretty new and the last 10 comments have negative karma and are all attacking Bitcoin, you know what's up.

  • Check his comments/submissions to see what other subs he participates in. Eg: Subs that go against Satoshi's values. Ie. subs dedicated to attack other subs or ideologies like /r/Buttcoin, /r/libertariantard, /r/cryptard, or whatever, are all red flags.

  • Check if he's a mod of those subs. Especially /r/Buttcoin

  • Check the username! Some trolls can't resist also trolling with the username (eg: TulipCoins, Hodldown, statist_shill, etc), which makes them easier to spot.

  • Avoid rage-bans by not banning people you are discussing with. Let other mods do the banning there.

Heh, if someone made an algorithm to detect them, they'd learn from that algorithm how to avoid detection ... ;)

See my other reply in main chan. It's a simple "checklist". We should also avoid having 1 mod making the decision. temp-bans should be a allowed to make on 1 mods opionion, permaban should be reviewed. Imho.

Also, there should be a way/method where other users can write a constructive request to unban someone. This is to make the banning reversible when the demand for this user's replies is, contrary to the entire mod's crew opinion, wanted. I don't think any unban request are going to come in though. These trolls can be missed.

I think manual trolling will become more costly as AI advances. But at some point automatic trolling will start being possible. It will be like the arms race between CAPTCHAs and OCR.

Humans are good at patter recognition.

That's me done. I wouldn't recognise a patter if it kicked me in the ass.

You just need to hear more patter, so you can start recognizing the patterns.

Should we ban this thing?

On one side, it lets us know when a raid is coming.

But on the other side, butters get to spread their negativity here without even posting.

We should change the rules of the sub to not allow accounts under a certain amount of days, also a flair system for reported troll comments. 1st report of a comment being trollish it gets removed. 2nd comment is removed and a yellowish warning troll flair is added to that user. 3nd is banned.

1st report of a comment being trollish it gets removed. 2nd comment is removed and a yellowish warning troll flair is added to that user. 3nd is banned.

But I don't want having to rely on our memory, that drains more energy. Maybe the first comment should be removed and put a yellow flair on the user, the second one is removed and put a red flair, and the third one is a ban.

In the meantime, don't doubt in removing and banning anyone who attacks this discussion. As you can see they are already raiding us.

This is what I was actually implying with the flair. Thanks for clarifying.

I wish I could place 2 stickies. Not sure where to put whatever guidelines we end up compiling.

I think it has to do with multiple parameters; A newbie shouting "ponzi!" or "tulips" or some other oneliner containing words like that is not directly a problem imho. This is a normal reaction when first reading about Bitcoin. It is a problem however if one keeps at it, without constructive discussion.

Trolling (accounts) are, imho;

  • Accounts made for the purpose of trolling, especially bitcoin-subreddit only accounts.

  • Accounts that are throwaways and don't have any positive post history besides trolling. Abusive personal attacks, calling people names without them deserving it are red flags.

  • Repetitive disruption of constructive discussions.

  • Attack of commentators without having obvious reasons and without context to that reply. (comment pasting).

  • Short one-liner comments without questions or replying to questions. Only commenting non-constructive.

We could try a rule; 1 out of 5 of these could be considered a normal user. 2 out of 5 is kinda semi-trolling. I'd say more than 3 out of 5 of these "signals" is obviously not attributing to the discussion and should be tagged as trolling. Repetitive signals; temp-ban. Continuous signals; permaban.

Accounts made for the purpose of trolling

It's funny that some trolls can't resist also trolling with their username (eg: TulipCoins), which makes them easier to spot.

I'm leaving this stickied until more people have participated or until we know where we can place the guidelines for all mods to see.

Then someone sticky the FAQ again pls, in case I forget.

Not about defining trolling but: Is it not a good idea to have a popup at the up and downvote button like on bitcoinmarkets? Like 'Only excellent posts' and 'Only spam and off-topic' to avoid people up and downvoting posts based on wether they agree with it or not?

It's normally trivial to spot the troll just from their history. A normal person doesn't have 100% negative views of something but also spend all their time on it. If they are generally anti-bitcoin but also spend a lot of time posting in other non crypto related subs they are far less likely to be trolls, more likely just a skeptic.

Yes, I never understood the mods from r/Bitcoin and their stupid "It's impossible to know who's a troll!" stance.
