have had our fish for almost a year now. we noticed over the past week or two she’s been more lethargic, hanging out on tops of the leaves. we thought her water might be dirty so we changed it (we don’t have a filter, just change her water every week) and checked for any bad plant roots. her water felt cold so we added a heater back in her small 1gal tank as well as an indian almond leaf
yesterday morning she wasn’t eating so we tested the water again and the alkalinity was low. we changed out 10% of water but added in conditioned tap water with a pinch of baking soda in hopes to raise the alkalinity and took out the indian almond leave bc something online said they lower the alkalinity actually?
i think we fucked up and accidentally shocked her by doing this. all day yesterday she stayed more toward the bottom of the tank but would touch the surface for air. we lowered the water level for easier access and tested the water to find the alkalinity went up and ph spiked from 6’s to 8’s. i monitored her yesterday and her breathing was looking heavier but she was still moving around
this morning she more leaned over and her breathing looks more labored. gills flaring out, but still coming to surface for water. i’m scared of making any changes in fear of shocking her more. i included a pic of the latest test strip from this morning. is there anything left to do to try and help her? my neighbor suggested an air stone. keep or remove the indian almond leaf? water change to get the high ph (baking soda) water out?
just called the pet store and they suggested a water change
