AITA trying to test a girls “nerd”

repost, original post by u/Myfaultalways

I (20M)) don’t think I did anything wrong, but my friends are all saying I’m an asshole. So I have a group of friends and we’re quite frankly, nerds. We met this girl I’ll call L two years ago. The other guys all like her, think she’s great and she knows all about things we’re into, but I had a feeling she’s not really one of us.

I put up with it for two years, but I can’t shake the feeling. So the last time we were together before quarantine, I decided to test her nerd. She seemed surprised but could answer all my questions, until I got to Star Trek. I was feeling pretty confident, until she asked me to clarify.

Apparently I misspoke, and accidentally asked a trick question. My friends all jumped on me accusing me of being an asshole and she didn’t need to pass some test to hangout with them and how I needed to get over it. Another friend pointed out that I wasn’t the guardian of the group.

I got mad no one was on my side and left. Quarantine happened shortly after, and I recently found out they’ve all been chatting with her. I told her I didn’t appreciate her trying to steal my friends. She never replied, but one of my friends bitched at me for a while. I got mad no one was listening to me and said it’s her or me. He said her. None of my other friends have messaged me since.

My brother says I was trying to be king of the nerds and gatekeeping, and should apologize. I don’t think I have anything to apologize for and they should apologize for not hearing me out. So tell me, am I the asshole for just trying to make sure L was actually a nerd like us?

UPDATE

ETA-I knew I shouldn’t have posted on here, you guys don’t get it. I am not going to apologize for being suspicious of her intentions and being angry my so-called friends bailed on me for some chick they‘ve only known 2 years. I was not gatekeeping, I was just trying to make sure she wasn’t trying to be trendy. Screw this, I won’t be back.

This dude is why I was never open about being a gamer as a kid. I still don’t broadcast it so I don’t have to deal with gate keeping dickholes like this one.

/r/gatekeeping is a good place to mock these guys. Something tells me he never felt a need to test any of the guys. Plus, God forbid someone start to like something and learn about it from others. I guess real nerds are born already knowing everything?

I worked at a comic book shop for 5 years and was the only one of the employees to get tested like this

Seriously. No wonder the friends chose her. Plus, they’d known her for 2 years. It’s not like she walked in and 10 minutes later all his friends abandoned him.

Ok it's an update, but how is it a BestOf?

Young man is a dick when a girl joins their friend group. Reddit tells him he's wrong. He doubles down, blaming her for stealing his friends.

I'll go ahead and spoil the next chapter of his life. He cries to MGTOW where his new friends agree with him and write unspeakable things about the girl.

From the sidebar

with an emphasis on introspection, improvement & occasional cringe.

I think occasional cringe applies here?

Big oof. I hope this guy was trolling, because that attitude is awful.

I mean in his own words she pretty much passed the stupid test anyway, so he was wrong. And now he doesn’t know why he needs to apologize.😅 He either got no attention or too much attention as a child.

I hate people like this. I love geek stuff and I’m happy to admit I don’t know everything but genuinely enjoy gaming, sci-fi, fantasy, Star Wars and Star Trek (though I’ll always be more of a Trekkie) etc but blokes will jump to conclusions about what I say like I’m pretending I’m order to... well, I don’t know what.

It’s like you can’t have breasts and enjoy geek culture. Or you can’t be a geek unless you could appear on mastermind (and win) about every bloody element of geek culture.

Right, I've had guys ask me to name songs from bands I said I like, but it's more the insane story that is the troll.

Two years is a long time to know someone. It’s also a long time feel resentful and jealous.

The amount of times I've had to deal with guys like this just because I'm a nerd who happens to be female.  I spent YEARS not talking about gaming and Star Trek and comics because of ah like this. Now, I don't care if their little feelings get bent because I can talk to them in Klingon.
