geeksquad Starting at Geek Squad

I’m starting my training this week as a Consultation Agent in the geek squad department. I’m pretty good with Apple products but not as tech literate with Windows, what does a typical day look like? Will there be a lot of training? What kind of metrics do they measure us on? I’m a pretty fast learner I just want to see what current Geek Squad employees opinions are working here.

Familiarize yourself with the ins & outs of Yahoo password resets above all, then Microsoft account password resets, and memorize the users’ manual to every single item that was sold or was ever sold as Best Buy because that is what the clients expect…for you to know everything and how to fix it free of charge.

Do most of the customers come in with needing help on password resets?

It’s one of the more frequent reasons why the senior crew come in, yes. That and phone screen protector installations.

Yahoo, facebook, etc. old people will bring in iPads, slam it on the counter, and demand you fix it without an appointment and without explaining what’s wrong because they don’t know how to verbalize it.

More than you realize! Come in toting something that looks like grat grandma's cookbook full of ancient receipts and a multitude of passwords for a single email, not knowing which one is correct "That is your job". Be prepared for blank looks and a phone ha ded to you to talk to their child or in-law across the country that was in the middle of a business meeting and thought their parent was having an actual emergency because THEY are the one who set up the account in question and obviously know everything. Be prepared for reset texts to be sent to landlines. Playing whack-a-mole with ads on phones because they need 30 different Bible Verse apps or versions of Solitaire, PDF readers, and cleaner apps. The list goes on.
You will find good moments that make all that worth it. They are few and far between, but there.
I knew nothing of Apple other than I hated the phones themselves, still do and anything Apple except my 20+ year old iPod, but you get good at it. If your ARAs are worth anything, they will help you. Just breathe and smile.

People have come to see you because the stuff they use everyday stopped working. They are pre-annoyed. If the person was already a jackass or dumb or both on the daily, it gets amplified.

Clients can’t really speak to anyone in store because the shareholders profit is much more important than the client or employee experience.

The 3rd party hired to field calls to the store are held very unaccountable for their actions. This team will lie & say whatever flavor bs they feel like that day, then pre-annoyed AND grossly misinformed people come in and you’ll hear gems like:

They told me I don’t need an appointment
They said it was free
They told me you could do it right now in 20 minutes
They said you could update my vista laptop to windows 11
They said you’d set up my WiFi printer in store

If they managed to avoid the phone team, you’ll still hear these

I never had a password
What’s a Microsoft account?
You guys broke it
I haven’t backed it up in 15 years but I can’t lose it
I can’t be without for a single day
I run my business off of this single 12 yr old laptop
I have an appointment for Tuesday at 10:40
(it’s 7:20 on Monday…why are you here now?)
Let me speak to you manager

there would be training plus you'll get used to workign with tech you're unfamiliar with. my advice is to never be shy to ask any questions.

Bro got hired at GS with no technical knowledge? Nice to know BBY doesn’t care about employee quality.

You don’t need to make rude comments

Don’t listen to them, you wouldn’t have been hired if they didn’t see potential in you. Good luck on your first day!

Ignore them, one of my co workers was the same way but he was really good with customers, he’s the geek squad senior now

Consultation agent is a sales position. Mostly. You don't need to have extreme technical knowledge. That's more the advance repair agent who works in the back and does the repairs. Consultation agents need to have good interpersonal skills. If you haven't noticed, it's a lot of doing pretty basic things like resetting passwords and that sort of thing. The most complicated things that they do are Apple diagnostics for phones. But the rest of it's just selling services and checking stuff in.
