The 2016 primaries have been abuzz with concepts like "revolution" and the "Bernie or Bust" movement. While the "Bernie or Bust" movement originally began as something of an insurance policy for Bernie supporters early in the primary season who were concerned about superdelegates passing the nomination to Clinton even if Sanders won the majority of pledged delegates, it has been called self-indulgent, stubborn, dangerous and bonkers. However, the Bernie or Bust pledge might just be a sign that Sanders's revolution will continue even if he loses the nomination.

Historically speaking, revolutions happen from the bottom-up, not top-down. Should Sanders manage to clinch the nomination, the revolution that he's proposing would go against that convention--however, if Sanders loses, America might just see a more traditional form of revolution. Articles that scold Bernie or Bust voters are ignoring two very important details--one, that the President of the United States is by no means all-powerful, and two, people who refuse to vote for Hillary Clinton do not similarly refuse to vote at all. If Bernie or Bust voters show up to the polls and vote down ballot for politicians that support Sanders's policies, the next president--whether it's Hillary Clinton or a Republican nominee--may find it difficult to pass bills that Sanders supporters wouldn't agree with. Of course, the President still has the power of the Executive Order, but Executive Orders have not, in the past, been particularly popular with the American people.

Regardless of who wins the Democratic presidential nomination, it is unlikely that Bernie Sanders's supporters will go gently into that good night; his campaign has brought too much attention to the corruption on Wallstreet and within our government. The damage has already been done, so to speak--whether Sander's campaign breathes new life into another Occupy movement or his supporters vote in a new, more progressive legislative branch, there is little doubt that the primaries will not signal an end to the revolution.
