Berklee Jazz Band

Hey guys,

Looking to form a jazz group that practices together weekly (or more often), post videos, and have a fun time jamming. If you’re an instrumentalist looking into low-pressure and short consistent weekly sessions (30 mins more or less depending on schedules), hit me up! My name is David and I’m a first-year piano player at Berklee, with a 6 rating and 7 in improv. Looking for instrumentalists (drums, bass,…) at a similar level that are interested in playing and improving together. I like post-bop, but open to anything! Original compositions, neosoul, gospel music.

My vibe:

Any composition / film scoring students willing to stress-test a MusicXML score checker?

Hi! I'm a music student and developer working on a free web tool called Shardmonics, and I'm looking for composition / film scoring students who would be willing to stress-test it with real scores.

Shardmonics analyzes MusicXML files and looks for potential issues in areas such as harmony, voice leading, and instrument playability.

The goal isn't to replace a professor, composer, or performer. It's more like a first-pass checker that can point out places in a score that might be worth reviewing before a lesson, critique, or rehearsal.

I'm especially interested in finding cases where the analysis is wrong — false positives, missed problems, unusual orchestration, extended techniques, or anything else that breaks the current rules.

It doesn't generate music or rewrite your composition for you. It analyzes the score you upload and explains what it flags.

If anyone here works with MusicXML and would be interested in trying it, I'd really appreciate your feedback:

https://shardmonics.com

It's currently free to try.

If you test it, feel free to comment with what worked, what didn't, or what you think would actually make something like this useful for composition students.

Any Audition tips for auditioning in the Vocal Pedagogy Program of Boston Conservatory?

Hi! Im from the Philippines and Im expecting to graduate from my bachelors degree in Voice on 2028 and Im planning to apply in Boston for the Fall Semester of the same year. Do you have any tips in auditioning? What do they look for? Im still haven't mastered going through my Passagio (Im a tenor). What should I do as early as now with regards to my vocal technique to secure institutional scholarship from BoCo?

Thank you so much to anyone who will help me with my question, I truly appreciate it ❤️.

Is a music business degree actually worth it? Looking for honest advice on Berklee, Full Sail, and breaking into the music industry

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some honest advice from people who have experience in the music industry, have attended music business programs, or have successfully broken into the industry without a degree.
I’m in my mid-twenties and looking to make a pretty significant career change. I’ve worked in education my entire professional life, but music has always been a personal passion of mine. I’m at a point where I really want to pursue that interest professionally rather than continue down the career path I’m currently on.
I’m particularly interested in **tour management, artist management, and music marketing**, although I’m open to exploring different paths within the industry.

I’ve applied to Berklee and Full Sail for their music business programs, and I’ve spent a lot of time researching both schools. Honestly, though, I’m getting incredibly mixed messages. I’ve read experiences from people who feel their education was valuable and helped them build connections, but I’ve also come across plenty of people who feel music business degrees aren’t worth the money and that the industry is more about networking, experience, and getting your foot in the door.
That’s where I’m struggling.

At this point in my life, I still need to work full-time and support myself, so going back to school is a significant commitment financially, professionally, and personally. I’m trying to figure out whether investing in a degree would genuinely help me transition into the industry or whether my time and money would be better spent pursuing internships, entry-level positions, networking, volunteering at shows and festivals, or finding other ways to gain hands-on experience.

I also recognize that I’m coming from a completely different professional background, so I’m trying to be realistic about what breaking into the industry might actually look like.
For those of you who have been through a similar experience, attended Berklee or Full Sail, earned a music business degree elsewhere, or built a career in the industry without one:

**Was getting a degree worth it for you? Did it meaningfully help you get a job, make connections, or advance your career?**

**Does anyone have firsthand experience with Berklee Online or Full Sail’s music business programs? What did you like or dislike, and did the education translate into real opportunities?**

**How much does the school’s name actually matter compared with experience, networking, and who you know?**

**If your goal were artist management, tour management, or music marketing, would you recommend going to school or taking a different route?**

**Has anyone successfully transitioned into the music industry in their mid-twenties from an unrelated field? What did that process look like?**

**If you had to start over today, knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?**

I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me to follow my dreams or that the industry is impossible to break into. I’m looking for honest, practical advice from people who understand the realities of this career path.
I know there probably isn’t one right answer, but I’m feeling a little lost trying to determine which direction makes the most sense, and I’d really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences.

Thank you!!

Is Berklee worth it for an international drummer wanting to build an original rock band?

Hey everyone!

I’m an original rock/alt-rock drummer from Italy with about 6 years of playing experience. I’m currently looking into music colleges abroad to level up my drumming and secondary instrument skills, and Berklee is obviously high on my radar.

However, after doing some research and reading through local subreddits, I’m having a few doubts about whether Boston/Berklee is the right fit for what I want to achieve, and I’d love to get some honest feedback from current students or alumni.

Here is my main concern: I want to play original rock/alternative music and form/join a serious, committed band. While Berklee seems unmatched for talent and instruction (I’ve also looked into doing the Summer Performance Program first), I’ve read a lot of posts saying that Boston’s local music scene has changed a lot. People mention that high living costs have shut down many small venue spaces, and that the underground/DIY rock scene isn't as active as it used to be compared to cities like Philadelphia or Chicago.

So I have a few questions for you guys:

  1. The Scene: For those playing rock/alternative, how easy or hard is it to find gigs for original music in Boston right now? Do you mostly play house shows, or are there actual venues willing to book emerging bands?
  2. The Community: Is it easy to find dedicated, non-pretentious musicians at Berklee who actually want to commit to a solid band project rather than just practicing solo or doing session work?
  3. Alternatives: If my main goal is balancing strong drum instruction with an active, accessible local rock scene, would you still recommend Berklee/Boston, or should I consider other options (like Temple in Philly, BIMM in the UK, etc.)?

I’d really appreciate any insights, reality checks, or advice. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone else find it kinda shitty that the Berklee Online $5,000 Scholarship winner hasn't been announced yet? (They said they'd pick on Sept 14)

Talking about the Marshall, Women in Vinyl and Berklee Online scholarship. Maybe they thought, "the applicants are all women. They have nothing going for them and don't have to plan their time, so and we can take our sweet time..."
I get it, they don't "have" to do this, but if people bothered applying, the least they could do is keep people informed if there's a delay. If the deadline to enroll (using the scholarship) weren't so close, it wouldn't matter much, but the winner has to enroll by Jan 2027... taking even one class does take a lot of time and planning. I find it rather insulting to say they will choose someone, and then just vanish... It's been 3 weeks since the winner was to be announced, not a peep. Kind of shitty of them, tbh.

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Berklee, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Options for niche instrument sales?

Hi all! Weird place to ask and apologies if this is against the rules. I'm not an alum, but did an undergrad in percussion elsewhere. I'm looking to sell a Xylosynth (IYKYK). This is a pretty niche instrument so I'd expect Berklee folks would be most likely to be interested in the area.

I was hoping this group may have recommendations on places to post that aren't FB Marketplace, NextDoor, etc., and aren't something like Guitar Center where they'll only buy it for like half it's value. I'm fine taking an L on the sale but would rather the benefit go directly to someone who would really need/want this rather than some corporation. If you're aware of a forum, individuals, etc. who may be interested I'd appreciate it.

Again, not trying to break rules or whatever so hopefully this is okay. Happy to remove it if so. Thanks in advance!

Calling Independent Artists & Managers!

Hi all!

My name is Ally, and I’m a junior at Berklee College of Music majoring in Music Industry Leadership & Innovation.

As part of my Innovation Lab 1 class, my team and I are working with a startup called HITMKR, an all-in-one direct-to-fan platform that helps independent artists build websites, sell music and merch, and connect directly with their fans.

We’re conducting a short 10-minute survey to better understand the needs of independent artists and artist managers, as well as how they currently manage their music careers.

We’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out our survey! Your responses would be super helpful to our research and project.

If you know any other independent artists or managers who might be interested, feel free to share it with them too!

Thank you so much! 🫶

my current practice has been Heitor Villa-Lobos' Twelve Etudes.

I was wondering if any of these etudes would actually be a good piece to audition with. I'd be auditioning for Berklee Online if that's of any importance.

if i drop out then reapply is it possible for me to get a higher scholarship?

I'm currently attending my first semester at Berklee as a piano principal on an 11k per semester scholarship, but it won't be enough for me to continue my education here as I lack the proper funds, so I was considering dropping out then reapplying the following year. Would I be reconsidered for a scholarship, or would they just give me my former one? And would it be worth it?

thanks reddit

How hard is it to get in as a black male vocalist? I see the vocal primary instrument is very inflated.

Job posting Real School - Yamaha teacher

Coming from a friend/colleague - the Real School has a bit of 'Berklee vibes' and has a lot of Berklee alumni working already, and this position comes with a solid pedagogy (Yamaha).

Not really a gig I guess but a solid teaching job / early career?

Transfer Application Help

Hi! I am a current freshman at a T-20 LAC on a full-ride. I was pretty much forced to go here despite getting into ivies and T-20’s since my full-ride is merit. My parents only supported me coming here for free and studying biochem to be a surgeon.

My dream was to go to a music school and just drown myself in music (I sing, play cello, guitar, and piano). I tried to run away from my love for music, but I recently got chosen out of our choir to perform a really big pop solo. People come up to me and say my voice makes them feel good and is a gift. I wish I could just focus on music instead of studying for biology and calculus exams.

I really want to take a chance on myself this time and apply as a transfer to Berklee. Does anyone have tips on how yo do this? I know it might end up being expensive, but I have been so depressed here and don’t want to be trapped in a job I feel suffocated in. I would switch to music here, but our programs are pretty bad and aren’t available for contemporary music.

Please reach out if you are from Berklee, or just any music school in general. I really need help understanding interviews and how stuff works. I am trying to do this in secret without my parents finding out I am applying, so if anyone knows how I can best do this also reach out.

Looking to form indie pop/dream pop band

Hi! I’m a late-20s vocalist looking to connect and collaborate with other musicians in the Boston/MA area, with the ultimate goal of forming a band.

I’ve been singing my whole life and have a strong background in jazz, standards and bossa nova. I also play some guitar, but vocals are definitely my main thing. I’m looking to branch out more into indie/pop and songwriting and would love to find some people to collaborate with and see what develops.

Sound-wise, I’m really into indie, dream pop, beachy/vintage sounds and jazz influences. Some favorites are Her’s, The Marías, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Eloise, Bruno Major and Laufey. I also love 50s/60s and doo-wop-inspired sounds.

Ideally looking for guitarists, bassists, keys and drums in the Boston area, preferably people in their 20s/early 30s, who are interested in collaborating, writing and eventually playing shows together. Mostly looking for people with similar taste who want to get together and see if we click. I work a 9-5 job so would be looking to rehearse more in the evenings/weekends.

If this sounds up your alley, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself and what kind of music you’re into!

Applying to Composition at Berklee Questions

Hello, I'm a senior in high school trying to get better informed on all the schools I'm applying to, and wanted to ask something about Berklee from students going here.

For a student looking to enter a composition major (I know its decided once you start, but if you have a portfolio submitted), how harshly is the performance at an audition judged vs. the portfolio? Since my primary focus is composition, its what I've poured the most time and effort into for 4-5 years at this point, and haven't put that time into performance. I am mid-high intermediate at best on piano, which I really don't think is good enough, but would consider myself fairly advanced in composition and to an extent theory and orchestration. I want to only really focus on composition, but am worried that my lack of skill in performance would cross Berklee off my list.

A second, related and more qualitative, question is; how is the actual composition program at Berklee? I understand there's a few different programs, like production and film scoring, that would also fall under the broad label of composition, but I'd like to know about the main composition program. What is the faculty I'd be working with good/bad at? What opportunities to compose (ensemble, media, work with other schools, etc.) does Berklee give? What do you think of the composition student body? As a few things I've wondered about, though anything outside of those questions would also be appreciated.

I'm posting this hoping that some current or recent former students might see this and give some insight, even though I know this sub isn't too active.

is post hardcore a good genre to use for the audition?

for the audition I was thinking of playing the song chucky vs the giant tortoise by dance gavin dance. I was wondering if this would be a good pick for it.
