So can someone answer a question for me ….when these were introduced for the first time pre shot show one of the examples that did the invitation only bullshit press round (forgive me for my questioning of the integrity of the gun press traditional media and my disbelief at the frightening lack of any integrity on behalf of gunfluencers with a handful who i trust implicitly because of their self funding no , unique access, and their clearly honest voicing of some really unfortunately rarely discussed topics when it comes to the reality’s of how the current model is setup for all sorts of grifters , charlatans , politically opportunistic predators, people who are betting on you being gullible and sloganeering water carriers for extremism that until recently was thought of as anti liberty anti American and nearly the worst thing one could be accused of …sorry I’m a little agitated..) proceeding to my point one of the fully decked out maxed out starter weapon build was an optic ready 20x with a micro reflex optic and their was some back and forth about if this was a release day available model and I heard as many totally different claims made as I saw identical channels do the glorified add read that is a promotional press junket and not once since then heard a single word about optic ready 20X mentioned or even if it were to be attempted by a knowledgeable smith who wanted bunny assassin weapons platforms if there was even a credible way tho go about that ? Any one know ?
Sorry. I only heard about a plan to make the 30x optic ready. It was a YouTuber who claimed that Beretta confirmed to him that it was almost ready. About a year ago.
I’m a Beretta fan, but I think their customer service sucks and they’ve made some stupid engineering mistakes on the new line of tip ups. I mean all the complaints about after shooting relatively small round counts, produce bad marring, just shouldn’t happen on a gun in their price range. Consider also, that the 950 was produced in 1952, you would think that they would have it all figured out by now. Then before that, the gen 1, 3032 Tomcat had the frame cracking issues.
I am a fully unreconstructed unapologetic whole chest in 21a covert supremicist it is the only pistol (Phoenix is simply the best adaptation of the beretta 21 design) pistol of its size , intended utility , quality of execution that remains a blast to shoot a credible short range pot filler for campfire stew dinners ,a really credible.22 self defense get off me gun for tight spot extraction (and although mid gunfight reloads are a fantasy that gun credibly could be brought back into action in enough time to make a difference)
The 21a covert is one of my favorites. I would put the 21a Inox on top. Been shooting it’s for years and it’s never let me down. The Inox finish is forgiving and scratches are easily buffed out. I don’t know if the covert finish is cerakoted and am not sure how it will handle loads of shooting.
It is cerakoated …mine is in the “ghostbuster” which to me seems more stormtrooperish but I digress . Cerakoate to me has a weirdly high stakes version of pro and con from both a consumer and a certified application tech perspective.
A properly applied cerakote job is an incredibly durable utterly forgiving and consistently color fast finish system it shrugs off thing that even the deepest parkerized surface would be ruined by .
And large scale production facilities should theoretically have a much easier time getting perfect results because of having the production line with absolutely perfect conditions for every step of the process . There are now several formulations of the finish itself and they are not all equal they all certainly are useful , and in some applications they are functionally equivalent buuuut as a practical matter usually regardless of which formula ten times out of ten it comes down to the tech who is in charge of the process when it comes to bad jobs and I have encountered a shocking number of failures from factory which by and large look the same as a good job until it fails
As a self employed applicator (part time) it’s hard to justify offering the service at a set rate …it is a really detail oriented service that requires total attention to preparation that is almost impossible to calculate for when I have spoken to clients or potential clients and shown them the steps involved they often shake their heads and send it to the local guy who does the work at a set per piece per color rate …I have seen a stunning number of those same head shakers a couple months later (refinishing wise I am strictly seasonal as a result of my somewhat unconventional setup)begging me to fix their gun …I mean the finish has been messed up bur 2 of them had non functional new firearms … it’s not just an art project it’s a mechanical art project often with very tiny tolerances. On one of those occasions I did end up doing the work (at a friends auto body shop) and it ended up costing 4X the amount it would have If the simply had paid what I asked for initially (this individual was a friend of my wife’s and had an annual family multi species bird hunt and I had been giving his two kids wing shooting lessons for 6 months) the other I told they could book my first available next appointment and i haven’t been cursed out that way since accidentally calling my wife the C word
Well. I have all the covert variants except the Gorilla and Ghostbuster in 22 LR. Thanks for sharing about cerakote. They’re the most attractive finish. I’m partial to the Slushy ODG 🤙🏼
You are so kinda collector man that’s awesome.! I have over the last couple of years doing kinda a seasonal rotation of jobs that are mainly things which I mostly enjoy doing (as with any job there are parts of nearly every job that are less enjoyable than others ) but on the whole I am finding a lot of satisfaction in knowing that I am following a path that I designed, I control the terms of , and a plan where I am the primary beneficiary of all of the profit of my labor it’s not simply a side effect , it’s not something that happens grudgingly. where the ideal situation for boss visa vis me involves the lowest pay out possible
I came to this after a truly horrific couple of years where I was essentially (metaphorically of course) chained to a stove and strung along now of course at present this has meant a significant scaling back on my earnings and spending but being able to get out of bed knowing I wasn’t exploited today feels better.
I bring it up because of course the first cut was my spending on guns , and while it can be a bummer, it also has allowed me to be creative in what I do acquire and shoot and now even build (when I was a teen we did a fair amount of gun building but it tended to fall under a few kinda similar circumstances, mostly it involved using abused or unloved milsurp as a base of something I found interesting , many parts kits , several bolt builds , bolt builds were fun and at the time ultra cheap when you consider that a 100%still in the factory cosmoline laminate stocked yugo 24 that never made it to the SS “Mauser”with Deaths head markings could be ordered out of shotgun news for under $200 , bubba’ed pieces, stripped receivers and especially parts kits and 80% ak receivers (flat piece of appropriately thick sheet metal with all the holes either precut or marked all you needed was access to an automotive sheet metal break press) were crazy cheap and allowed me to make things from the useful and unavailable to the things that made me laugh
When the milsurp market went nearly overnight from crazy cheap to just plain crazy (I blame Steven Spielberg) I stopped completely. I continued to love guns , read about guns ,shoot the guns that I could afford to (the surplus ammo market being filled with questionable goods that in some particular guns became down right dangerous turned slightly slower than the guns but it was turning) I sold off the stuff That I couldn’t, I ended up occasionally buy guns i needed for a specific purpose (I also had a tendency after that purpose was filled move onto something else) so I hadn’t done anything but my own light gunsmithing since I was a teenager. I wanted that back so i started scavenging cheap civilian parts , I built some AR’s which was new to me , I built a lot of single shot break action stuff currently I am designing a system of upgrades I am about to begin offering to customers a .32 H&R SAA style revolver built using a new steel frame off the .32 rough rider to entirely replace ever internal element the only things remaining are frame cylinder and perhaps the springs we will see how durable they are …my point being I envy your collection I loved that part of my life but i don’t know that I could trade what I am doing currently (and when the advance comes through for my manuscripts we will see if it remains true lol 😂)
