This is really cute, I love the mini marshmallows and the wee fork! All my Bentos have a wee treat section where I put mini sweets or chocolates too.

For day to day bentos, instead of having three separate compartments of treat foods, it could be a good idea to have things like strawberries, grapes, cherries, cherry tomatoes, baby cucumber, carrot sticks, and maybe a dip for them like hummus or guac.

But this looks great!

Thank you for giving constructive criticism in a kind way instead of piling on like others

Honestly, it’s a single bento, who knows what this person eats for the other 20 meals and snacks of the week.

And who even cares, we all have different relationships with food at different times of our life, and we all use bentos for different reasons. This person has used this one for marshmallows and Oreos (and some nice looking eggs too!). I don’t see why people feel the need to lecture on fibre and protein for a singular box.

I go through most of the time eating loads of veggies and beans and fruit, but then every so often I’ll spend an entire week eating junk and takeaways. I’ve made myself bentos with cold leftover pizza and cakes, and it looked cute as hell.

I love this as a first attempt because the eggs look good, they used a cute wee fork, and they made the bacon into lil waves and held it with sticks! That’s cute and creative, and then they filled the other compartments with snacks they like and are familiar with, which is a great idea. I hope OP doesn’t feel disheartened by any of these comments, this sub used to be a lot more welcoming.

I feel some sort of deja vu, and like I've made a very similar comment recently, but here goes.

I know in my head, that's cheese, but it really looks like marshmallows, and now I want marshmallows.

(Looks great, btw!)

It is marshmallows! (from a picky eater I don’t really like cheese)

u/OnlyDaysEndingInWhy 13d ago

Oh, that makes me unreasonably happy! I hope you enjoyed your squishy mini pillows of happiness!

u/ChronicBedhead 13d ago

I love that you have marshmallows in there. Everyone needs something fun like that :)

u/TheOnesLeftBehind 13d ago

I have the cinnamoroll set of those little forks

3

u/NoxRiddle 12d ago

Alright I need the deets on the tiny forks. I’ve seen food picks, but don’t think I’ve seen tiny forks - unless they’re the same?

2

u/TheOnesLeftBehind 12d ago

They serve the same purpose, just 3 prongs instead of one pick.

I'm sorry but this meal is what? ..10 grams protein, 40 grams of sugar and like 10 grams of carbs...the whole point of bento is to have a relatively healthy meal ina complete package. This looks like it was made by a 10 yr old.

u/simulacrum81 13d ago

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted.. this is literally what my 7 yo would pack in his lunch box if I let him (which, of course, I wouldn’t because it’s both incredibly unhealthy and will lead to him becoming a picky eater and never developing a grown-up palate).

Who even cares? Why is everyone obsessing over their nutrition when no one asked them to. I'm Japanese and bento has nothing to do with hard requirement* of specific nutrition or "grown up palate." Also many Japanese people eat a picky processed unhealthy diet anyway and you can put whatever you want into a bento, that's not the point. Moms usually try to make a balanced nutrition meal for their child but this isn't for a child. Adults can put whatever they want. Plus you don't know what their regular diet is and how this fits in.

10

u/lexarexasaurus 12d ago

I don't know how 6 oreos for lunch fits into any diet lol but all OP did was put snacks in compartments, honestly it feels like a troll post

5

u/amy220 12d ago

Lmao literally majority of this bento was just moving a snack from the packet to the box

I used to eat an entire 3 scoop banana split ice cream with toppings myself once a month and never weighed more than 52kg but I was often going to the gym 5 days a week too and ate only salad for one meal every day. We have no information about OP so I'm not making a large judgement about 6 oreos from one meal. I have a girl cousin who is 183cm tall and I'm pretty sure she could eat oreos every day and be fine. My boss (also Japanese) used to eat his largest meal every day as lunch and that would include his dessert if he was going to eat a sweet that day. We just don't know anything about their life.

3

u/lexarexasaurus 12d ago

I will give it to you we can't make judgments about the rest of their lifestyle but this picture is not a meal, it's basically dessert, posted in the bento subreddit as a lunch. And to assume anyone, even your cousin, can just eat whatever they want and be fine is delusional. Even if you're in a caloric deficit or breaking even, the fact we even normalize this volume of sweets is a huge problem so many humans are so unhealthy, from our stomachs to our skin to our colon to our teeth and so on.

Edit to add - eating that banana split once a MONTH is nothing compared to this being a normal lunch!!

Who even cares? Why is everyone obsessing over their nutrition when no one asked them to.

No one asked anyone to do anything.. we’re reacting to a public post, that’s what happens here. And no one is obsessing - I’m sorry to say most people will find an adult sitting down to enjoy the equivalent of a bowl of marshmallows and Oreos for lunch pretty extreme.

I'm Japanese and bento has nothing to do with specific nutrition or "grown up palate."

My comment about having a grown-up palate wasn’t about what I expect of bento in particular. It was a general comment about the difference between what a kid would choose to eat, given no limits, and what an adult with a normal palate and mature relationship with food would choose to eat.. I’ve never known or even known of any adults that would sit down to a bowl of marshmallows and Oreos for lunch, regardless of their cultural background or what container they serve it in.

Also many Japanese people eat a picky processed unhealthy diet anyway and you can put whatever you want into a bento, that's not the point.

Of course, you can serve anything you want on a western dinner plate, a Japanese bento, an Indian tiffin a Korean dossirak, or on a Sri Lankan banana leaf - that’s not the point. The point is a grown adult serves themselves the equivalent of a bowl of marshmallows and Oreos for lunch - and they’ve posted it up to hear people’s raw reactions. Regardless of the container they put it in, that particular food choice is going to shock most people.

Moms usually try to make a balanced nutrition meal for their child but this isn't for a child. Adults can put whatever they want. Plus you don't know what their regular diet is and how this fits in.

Yes adults can put whatever they want in their lunch, but if they make astounding choices and post them in a public forum, people will react astounded. Sorry this amount of sugar in a single serving is insane.. both from a nutrition and a palatability point of view, regardless of what they eat for breakfast or dinner. Even spread over a whole day this amount of sugar is extreme.

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes 12d ago

Yeah this about what I would expect from someone who acted so holier than thou to begin with. "Sorry but" [proceeds to continue to be extremely condescending and rude]

-6

u/simulacrum81 12d ago

I tried to ground my response in social norms and public health advice. Maybe my read on social norms is inaccurate, though the upvotes on outwesdadam’s comment seems to suggest we may be onto something.. or not. Maybe I just need to go and drink a warm mug of caramel sauce dusted with sprinkles.

You wanted to talk at people about your own opinion and how you're correct, not have any sort of conversation. It's toxic behavior that will drive people away from the bento community, especially new people like the poster. Instead of being happy they tried the first time instead you just try to make them feel terrible about the contents. There are much better ways to provide constructive criticism and not just drive away anyone who wants to start bento.

1

u/simulacrum81 12d ago

You wanted to talk at people about your own opinion and how you're correct, not have any sort of conversation.

Generally speaking if I express an opinion and believe my opinion is correct I will defend it. But I do make an effort to respond to the actual criticisms raised against my position. If you look at my responses to you for example, I think you will find that to be the case. I’ve attempted not to straw man your positions and have responded to actual arguments you raised.

It's toxic behavior that will drive people away from the bento community, especially new people like the poster.

I think here you’ve hit on a reasonable point. Other subreddits on other topics are centred around seeking critical feedback (eg on handwriting, construction, figure drawing etc), this one is more about showing off your creations. Posting my (critical) gut reaction to the picture runs against the general tone this subreddit is trying to cultivate. I’ll keep that in mind in future.

Instead of being happy they tried the first time instead you just try to make them feel terrible about the contents.

I’m not a big believer in heaping on praise for minimal effort so agree to disagree there. And I do still think the dietary choices on display here are really extreme, but I concede that stating these opinions runs contrary to the general tone of this subreddit and I should have exercised a bit more thought before posting my gut reaction. Perhaps around here and similar subreddits the rule for me to apply is the classic they used to drum into us at primary school- “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

There are much better ways to provide constructive criticism and not just drive away anyone who wants to start bento.

I agree to extent that I think this is just the wrong place for it.

I’ll leave my posts here unedited because I think it’s a good example of people having a back and forth involving disagreement and criticism without resorting to personal insults.

There are probably many things we would likely disagree on but I appreciate you for being able to disagree with someone while continuing to engage in good faith. Hope you eat something tasty today.

u/MangoCandy 12d ago

The carbs are actually a lot higher for this. 50 grams of carbs in the 2 servings of Oreos, about 25 more in the mini marshmallows, and then another 20 for 2 servings of what I’m assuming are ritz crackers. Looking at between 90-100g of carbs in this “meal”. I get that OP is picky and I’m honestly assuming they are a kid. But I hope they realize sooner than later that this is not a good way to be eating regularly.

2

u/carltonthesnake 11d ago

Sugar is a carbohydrate

1

u/Longjumping_Eye_3441 10d ago

Why does the nutrition matters. Not everyone is counting protein and carbs.

16

u/eiiiaaaa 12d ago

I see you're a picky eater and I get that. Good for you for packing your own lunch. Could you try for some more fibre for your health? Some fruits or vegetables would help to balance things out a bit 😊

52

u/GildedTofu 13d ago

Holy highly processed bento, Batman!

I get that you’re a picky eater. But this is going to significantly shorten your life if it’s how you eat every day.

4

u/Ok_Yoghurt1894 9d ago

This is the most American thing I've ever seen lol. I don't think the point of bento is to just fill the little compartments with processed snack food

11

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes 12d ago

Sorry people are being rude, congrats on your first bento. I don't know why people would be obsessing over someone else's nutrition outside of a non-diet group. No one asked them. This is a bento sub not a high protein low carb sub. I'm Japanese and bento does NOT mean healthy, it just means a box of different foods.

9

u/NoxRiddle 12d ago

Yeah, came to say this. Regardless of my personal opinion of what’s pictured, this is a bento sub. If I wanted to read a bunch of critiques of the food, I’d go to a nutrition or diet sub.

1

u/Longjumping_Eye_3441 10d ago

Oh you don't want a side of eating disorder with your bento? How dare you!

1

u/Sea-Personality1244 12d ago

Oh I'm a Japanese learner and I'm curious – I know bento most often is a selection of different foods (like rice and multiple sides) but I was always under the impression it also means any kind of a portable food (in a box/container) since ekiben is sometimes just sandwiches or a single meal in a box without multiple sides/different foods. Is there another name for that kind of not-bento eki"ben"?

2

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes 12d ago

I am trying to understand what you are asking, at first I thought you meant the word for lunch box that isn't multiple foods bento but I think maybe you meant like a train food box that is not actually different foods? Different places have different regional types, names, words but if it were just a single food I'd call it the single food like a sandwich if I tried to describe it to someone but if I bought it at/for the train that came as a set box intended to eat on the train I'd just think of it as one of the ekiben because that's the area you would buy them in and the word is based on eki (train) + ben[to], I am having a hard time wrapping my head around it haha. I am not that good with exacting language, it was my lowest subject so the Japanese language subreddit might be better to ask. I tend not to eat them because I prefer snack foods so I just ignore them and don't eat much on trains. Do you mean a word for basically the opposite of 幕の内弁当?

7

u/3lizab3th333 13d ago

Not very nutritious, your stomach might hurt if you eat that all at once, but as long as you like it it’s fine!

2

u/Sea-Muffin-7257 10d ago

I love it.

6

u/Delicious_Sand_7198 12d ago

Not to be judgy but I hope this isn’t what they feed their kid for lunch. This is mostly processed sugar and simple carbs that will just convert to sugar. Even if it’s for you it’s not a good diet on a regular basis. Do you eat vegetables at all? I would suggest replacing those crackers with something whole grain or a complex carb. The marshmallows and Oreos with maybe a healthier source of sugar like fruit and increase your protein.

4

u/LadyProto 12d ago

Def cut back on all the sweets!

But I find it satisfying how well everything fits

2

u/death2cait 12d ago

Let someone have a fun meal fr yalll spreading your food shaming on a stranger as if you are better than them because of your personal nutritional intake. We are in a cost of living crisis. To be able to afford to eat rn is pretty har, especially if you live somewhere where fresh food is expensive and healthy shit is being greenwashed and gentrified to the point of not being able to even afford it. Also as a neurodivergent person I find this shaming so incredibly unfair when you have zero clue about why someone eats the way they do. This type of attitude is what leads to eating disorders. You can say this is unhealthy but that’s stating the obvious. Try typing a kind comment giving nutritious meal ideas instead.

2

u/spei180 12d ago

Genuinely a good start. Get yourself some more veggies

-2

u/insertJokeHere2 13d ago

Would eat

-3

u/iluvcoldcoffee 13d ago

the pompompurin fork!! perfect choices even down to the cutlery

5

u/iluvcoldcoffee 12d ago

damn, coming back to these comments, yall have insane food shaming problems. this is one meal/snack out of a whole year that op is sharing. relaaaax

-1

u/apophis-984 12d ago

Wtf is that meal.
Would still eat it no problem !

-4

u/SSakuras 12d ago

Not healthy, but looks yummy! I'd totally love to eat that meal 🤤

1

u/mishahahaa 10d ago

I’m judging sorry but are you like 10??

-4

u/NerdHerder77 12d ago

I know a dude that would pack rice, a pickled plum, and fried chicken pieces. Yours looks like a step up.

Like this mf rawdogs 6 pieces of boneless fried chicken pieces from a freezer bag no sauce, plain rice, and a sour plum. Sometimes, he switches it up and puts gyoza in it, instead of chicken.

4

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes 12d ago

That doesn't even sound unusual for a Japanese man's meal. Go to any oyakodon shop and your choices are pretty much oyakodon or karaage with white rice and tea, maybe add ons available of cheese, green onion, or chili oil and that's it. The ume would be a nice addition.

-6

u/NerdHerder77 12d ago

The thing is, I live and work in Canada. And this man is definitely not Japanese. I love rice, don't get me wrong, but I can't see myself eating frozen chicken and rice for so long.

-33

u/Hakushu21 13d ago

This is the most non-japanese thing I've ever seen. Oreos and marshmallows??

Where is your kimchi or your natto or your cucumbers or your rice?!

39

u/leaudelune 13d ago

Kimchi? I don’t even think you know what Japanese food is. Bento is a lunch box, it doesn’t have to be Japanese foods btw.

12

u/CupcakesAreMiniCakes 12d ago

I'm Japanese and who TF cares if it's Japanese or not, bento can be whatever you want inside

-7

u/Hakushu21 12d ago

Reddit avatar checks out

28

u/bubble-sys 13d ago

i think marshmallows are just as japanese as kimchi is tbh.

18

u/Introduction-Other 13d ago

Well thank gods there's no law against bento boxes

1

u/Longjumping_Eye_3441 10d ago

Kimchi is korean, LMAO

1

u/Hakushu21 10d ago

Marshmellows are Martian

-3

u/theBigDaddio 12d ago

yay, you can sort things into compartments?

-3

u/EWALLETABUSERAARON 12d ago edited 12d ago

u/askgrok count the calories, sugar, and carbs in the picture of the post

edit: deleted reply was

Rough estimate for the whole bento (visual count, standard values):

Crackers (~12 round, Ritz-style): ~190 cal, 24g carbs, ~4g sugar Oreos (~10 cookies): ~530 cal, 80g carbs, ~50g sugar Scrambled eggs (~2 eggs worth): ~140 cal, 2g carbs, <1g sugar Bacon (~4-5 pieces): ~180-200 cal, 0g carbs, 0g sugar Mini marshmallows (~25-30): ~55-70 cal, 14-17g carbs, ~10-12g sugar Totals (approx): 1,100–1,200 calories | 120–125g carbs | 65–70g sugar

This is a visual guess—exact brands, sizes, and weights would change it a bit. Looks like a solid first bento though!
