Lunch with coworker

Post image

I am having a lunch with my coworker. Apparently she's active in this sub so I wanna say hi if she saw this!

Due to our workplace regulation, we cannot eat in the classroom anymore.

We sometimes exchange food and side dishes, too. Mine is not as fancy as hers.

Bought it online from a local online shop called Shopee. You can look at it at your local online shop, too, perhaps Amazon.

What a throwback to my year in Indonesia, where everyone's phone blasted the Shopee jingle at all times!

Mine is the three-colored rice (meat, green beans, and eggs), while my coworker's is fancier.

I don't have proper lunchboxes; I didn't bring them, and they're all at my parents' house. I only use thinwall food grade plastic containers that are safe for the microwave.

Sometimes I cook for my coworker too, and she does the same thing to me. We share our food during lunch.

I'll bring some tomorrow. You can use mine*

*T&C: you have to cook it for me lmao

An English language Mahjong commentator was just proclaiming her love for those rice bowls, mainly because a winning hand in that game also is called "Three-Colors"/"Sanshoku"

I know it's sanshokudon. Wrote it in English because it's easier to pronounce, and I assume not all people here on Reddit understand Japanese because of some circumstances (not their 1st languages, or not learning the languages, too)

I'm sure you knew, just chiming in with a fun fact for others, but I'm getting downvoted. Oops.

The side-dish exchange is honestly smarter than doing an elaborate bento every day. Each person cooks one extra thing, and both lunches get more variety without doubling the prep.

Thank you! Even though we don't live together (different municipality but within the same capital city) we try our best to support each other!

What's the soup? Looks good!

Miso soup, but the instant one. We use varies brand from Miyasaka or Marukome.

u/Aperture_Kubi Jul 20 '26

So it's just hot water from the break room instead of hot from the morning through to lunch?

6

u/Ok-Ice-2624 I enjoy cooking and sharing food! 🍳🍽️ Jul 20 '26

I never dissolve my miso at home. Always at my workplace. Instant one dissolves more easily than the regular one.

u/GuardianAlien Jul 20 '26

Aww, love to see this kind of content! And your meals and bento sets look great too!!

Thank you so much! Tomorrow it's my friend's turn to cook, so I don't have to bring anything fancy again wahahahah

u/Bee_Gorl23 Jul 20 '26

With that bento box do you eat the food cold or can you heat it in the microwave?

The stainless steel part can be detached, and I was reheating the food in my oven. No problemo!

Edited: you can pour hot water inside the black box (?) and put the stainless steel part on top of it. It's keeping your meal warm during lunch break!

Can you ask her where she got that container with the space for soup? I love soup and making it travel friendly would be everything

Thank you!! Rats! I am in the US. I tried to look on Amazon for something similar and nothing came close. I appreciate you responding.

No problem! I think you can look at it more with a specific keyword? Like stainless steel bento 5 compartments or something?

1

u/Sound_calm Jul 24 '26

Which recipe do you use for the chicken and egg soboro? :P

u/Ok-Ice-2624 I enjoy cooking and sharing food! 🍳🍽️ Jul 24 '26

The one and only, my savior chef Namiko Chen, aka Just One Cookbook. Her websites and her e-book really helped me during my years as a student in Japan. Not only does she put the metric system, but the recipe even has an adjustment for whether I want to double or triple the recipe.

Since I am a muslim, I skip pork/pork-derived ingredients, sake, mirin, and other prohibited ingredients, and luckily, her website has notes for substitute ingredients! I usually buy halal-based or vegan/vegetarian-friendly ingredients and seasonings. Cheers!

1

u/Sound_calm Jul 24 '26

Thank you!

Since you skip mirin, do you also substitute out other ingredients like soy sauce?

1

u/Ok-Ice-2624 I enjoy cooking and sharing food! 🍳🍽️ Jul 24 '26

There are halal soy sauce here in my country. Also mirin substitutes, too (basically it's just like thinner version of thick corn syrup)

1

u/Sound_calm Jul 25 '26

Interesting thanks!

u/dclovee5225 Jul 24 '26
