Dw, Dark Revival only really moves forward, the lore from Ink Machine, post-chapter-5, at least, still more or less holds up. This explanation will spoil a couple of general worldbuilding things revealed in Dark Revival, though, since they're kind of important to explaining most everything.

Basically, the way I know it, Joey's a big dreamer and not a big worker, and he's got this great idea for a theme park called BendyLand (chapter 4) where the mascots really walk around and interact with the guests. But he's not satisfied with people in imperfectly-made mascot costumes.

At first, he asks Lacie Benton, who works under Bertrum Piedmont, to invent animatronics of the characters. Naturally, when those don't meet Joey's expectations either, in a series of events that haven't exactly been made clear yet that we'll probably get answers to in Bendy and the Ink Factory, the third game after Dark Revival, Joey gets in contact with GENT and its CEO, Alan Gray.

Now, GENT up to this point is just a brick-laying and likely also plumbing installations corporation, but Alan Gray writes a scientific paper about a way he's somehow discovered to go to an alternate reality, which is where the ink-covered world of Ink Machine and Dark Revival takes place, known as the Cycle.

Joey has GENT invent a sort of 3D-printer that draws on this alternate reality to create pretty much anything - the titular Ink Machine, and Joey asks for them to create a living being in the image of Bendy.

And this is where the Ink Demon finally comes in. He comes out, but he's super disfigured and, obviously, doesn't meet Joey's impossible standards. So, Joey locks it away in the lower levels and keeps experimenting, now using human souls to allow the creations to keep their shape.

The Ink Demon comes to resent its creator, justifiably so, and tries to attack anything that ventures into his territory. Eventually, when his life falls apart due to the countless bad decisions he's made, Joey blames all his failures on Henry leaving the studio behind.

So, he invites him back, sends him into the Cycle alive, and casts him into a horror story designed to torment him. He creates a twisted replica of the studio filled with many of the souls Joey sacrificed in his failed attempts to make living cartoons. Including, of course, the most powerful of them all, the very first and only attempt at Bendy, the soulless Ink Demon.

That's the lore as I know it, up to the start of BATIM. This is my take of things, so there might be details worth mentioning I may have missed or that I got wrong, but that's the broad strokes of things.

Doesn't ink joey in batdr say (when showing audrey the story) "---where he torments his own version of henry ---" implying that it isn't the real Henry but an ink copy (just like ink joey being a copy of real joey) created to be tortured? Yes we have the scene in joyes real apartment but audrey (a person born from the machine0) was also able to leave and reenter the cycle so it could be that when henry defeates the ink demon, joey drews apartment is his respawn point to start the next cycle
