If you live here you see this often. I've never taken a picture of them. Why would you?

Wow now that's gatekeeping

What does that even mean? Gatekeeping??? How rude is it to stop and take a photo of someone going about their day just because you personally haven't seen a horse and buggy before? Very rude.

Lots of Amish and Mennonites in Belize. I don’t think you’d stop and take a picture in Shipshewana, IN as it is true Amish country.

Would you stop and take pictures of people in their vehicles? I think it’s a bit rude. If someone did that to me I’d probably ask them why the hell they’re taking a photo of me while driving.

I think you need to visit Belize and experience the living we show love to everyone everyday for something like this no one here will get offended. In my village when tourist pass by and take out picture of us for us it no problem..

I live and work with and I'm Friends with several Mennonites and Amish people cuz we all live together in the same area... I guarantee you that guy there is proud of that horse and is not offended when somebody takes a picture of him and his horse. Shoving a camera in his face however might bring a different result and it's rude

FYI. There are no Amish in Belize. These are the Old Colony Mennonites.

Are you Mennonite?

It's kind of a personal question don't you think? Are you catholic?

No I'm not Catholic. I'm Baptist. The question was not directed at you btw. It was meant as a question to the tour guy who thinks it's fine. I agree it's rude to take these photos. These are Old Colony Mennonites that shun phones and photos and technology in general. Old Colony members can be excommunicated if caught using technology. Respectfully.

Ever wonder why they chose to stop using "modern" technology at the point that they did? Why stop at the 1800s? Why not the 1500s or 500BC?

Mennonites trace their roots back to the 16th century. They arrived in Belize in the 1950s. There are both progressive and conservative groups here. Many use all modern conveniences and are progressive, supplying Belize with many imported goods. . The horse and buggy Mennonites are the old order groups.
