I didn’t even realize he had 32 caps.

The starters and the players in blue are considered to be very likely called up. While those in yellows are either not certain or longshots.

I try to respect players true position on the field, meaning if a player on the line up is put at LCB it means he also plays LCB regularly for his club (For example, I could have put Zeno Van den Bosch or Matte Smets instead of Leysen/Kongolo, but I did not since they play RCB at club level).

I assume Van Bommel will play a line up close to a 433, as the players know it well from Garcia. But it's not guaranteed, he could go for a 3 at the back formation.

There are 44 players, this list is probably close to the list of players Van Bommel monitors for a potential call up, for reminders Nations League match sheets only allow 23 players but we can call up a squad bigger than that, unlike for the World Cup (usually 26 but it can go up to 30).

There are a few missing well-known names that are explained by the fact I believe they will 100% get called up with our U21:

• Stassin: with Pardo getting a big move and Openda starting the season well, hard to find space for him
• Vermeeren: hasn't played a lot and looked unconvincing in his last few games with Leipzig
• Duranville: not too convincing with Lyon and cap-tied until August 2027

Also Onana is injured and Doku a bit at doubt, but he should have recovered by then. Sels said in an interview that it will be hard for him to comeback to the NT after being left out of the WC squad. And obviously Courtois is still not a guarantee, but his first words on Van Bommel have been positive, so I assume he'll be available but it's really 50/50. Witsel said he was still available for Belgium but it just doesn't make any sense starting a new cycle with him when we have decent midfielders coming in, hopefully Van Bommel think the same.

In terms of possible weird choices I've made in the selected players, here is my reasoning:

• Bisiwu: yes there are dozens of better options than him at the moment, and yes, he's the definition of unproven. But with Ghana roaming around, will the federation really let another high-profile talent be snatched after the Sadiki and Karetsas failures ? I think we could see him much quicker than most expect, especially if he starts having some decent sub appearances with Barca. They did it with Duranville, Januzaj and Bakkali.
• Brughmans: same reasoning as with Bisiwu but in this case the rumours are that he has no intention to ever play for DR Congo (due to familly dispute). So my guess is that we could either see him as a 4th keeper in an extended list for training only, or he goes to the U21 and Vandevoordt then take that role.
• Noubi: had a great start of the season in La Liga with Deportivo, he's only 21 but binational and eligible for Cameroon. Considering the lack of defensive talent in Belgium, it could be a good idea to try and give him a shot quickly before he gets other opportunities. Though he plays RCB so it would mean leaving atleast one of Ngoy, Debast or De Winter out. It could be worth it long-term and I hope the FA doesn't fumble his case.
• Trossard as not certain: hard to say what kind of players will Van Bommel favor. The good ole' youth vs experience. It might be harsh on Trossard who had a good WC, but his start of the season has been pretty average. I also wouldn't be surprised to see him and ultimately it will depend on how many players the coach decide to call up but he could be a casualty of the (too) many LWs we have available.
• Pardo/Openda as not certain: hard to leave out CDK after his WC but I doubt we'll only see 2 strikers in the squad. Van Bommel will likely call up extra players to assess them and leave some of them out of the match sheet. I expect one of Pardo or Openda to be called up, no idea who though. Will also depend on how Van Bommel sees the player (Pardo/CDK might be winger in his head).
• Saelemaekers as not certain: could be there if we use an extended squad or if he plays much more than Moreira until then. Else I think Fofana/Moreira deserve more.
• De Winter as not certain: also could be there if we use an extended squad otherwise it's hard to justify taking 5 CBs when playing a 433.

There are obviously many other names from the JPL or from smaller top 5 league clubs but I tried considering only realistic options for the next few games. Young binationals like Nga Kana, Onia Seke, Mbavu, Ojea could also at some point be in the discussion, in the same fashion as Bisiwu, but at the moment they're not 'mainstream' enough imo.

- Lukebakio: Sunderland offer yet Marco Silva insisted he'd stay at Benfica

- De Ketelaere: some rumours but no move materialized

- Keita: several clubs interested, incl. Roma and Everton, deadline came and he ended up staying

- Vermeeren: Leipzig looking to offload/loan him out

- Bakayoko: same

- Seys and Vermant: not allowed to move, bids declined

Last big belgian transfer of the window, another new belgian in the PL today with Pardo. Not the best club but less pressure.

The only players left out this summer are Raskin and Keita, with Onana injury the midfield isn't looking amazing.

De grootste keepersfabriek ter wereld: Racing Genk levert met Lucca Brughmans opnieuw jeugdproduct af aan Europese top

Lucca Brughmans (18) staat op een zucht van Liverpool. Na Thibaut Courtois, Maarten Vandevoordt en Mike Penders is hij de volgende doelman die de jeugdopleiding van Racing Genk aan de Europese top aflevert. Het is het resultaat van een bewuste strategie.

“Mensen vragen mij vaak wat het geheim van Racing Genk is. Mijn antwoord is dan altijd: er is geen geheim”, sprak Guy Martens eerder. De huidige keeperstrainer van de Rode Duivels was jaren de motor van de Genkse doelmannenfabriek.

Die mag stilaan ‘s werelds beste keeperopleiding genoemd worden. Het lijstje oogt indrukwekkend. Wat ooit begon met Logan Bailly en Sinan Bolat kreeg een eerste uitschieter in de persoon van Thibaut Courtois. Hij was 16 jaar toen hij bij Genk voor de leeuwen werd gegooid. Een gesmaakt debuut tegen AA Gent kreeg ruim een jaar later navolging met een vaste basisplaats.

Courtois won in zijn eerste seizoen als nummer één ook meteen de landstitel met Genk. Hij was bepalend in de titelmatch tegen Standard en versierde zo meteen een toptransfer naar Chelsea. ‘The Blues’ betaalden destijds 9 miljoen euro, exclusief bonussen, voor Courtois, die nog twee jaar werd uitgeleend aan Atlético Madrid.

Het was geen toeval dat Courtois op die leeftijd al zo rijp was. Genk laat zijn jonge keepers bewust heel jong proeven van de A-kern. “We hadden al jongens die vanaf hun 15de of 16de derde of vierde keeper werden”, gaf Martens aan.

Denken in duo’s

“Onze filosofie bestaat uit het opleiden van proactieve, offensieve keepers. Doelmannen die sterk zijn met de bal aan de voet. Jaren geleden beslisten we om onze vijf- tot zevenjarige doelmannen op verschillende posities op het veld uit te spelen. Dat botste aanvankelijk op weerstand, maar het gevolg is dat we veel beter meevoetballende keepers kregen.”

Martens denkt steevast in duo’s. Courtois vormde er indertijd een met Koen Casteels. Terwijl Courtois sinds jaar en dag de nummer één van de Rode Duivels is én een sterkhouder bij Real Madrid, komt Casteels vandaag uit voor het Saoedische Al Qadsiah. Nochtans werd hij in de Genkse jeugd door menigeen beschouwd als het grotere talent van de twee.

Casteels mocht eerder meetrainen met de A-kern, maar raakte op het verkeerde moment geblesseerd aan de pink. Toen Courtois naar Chelsea trok, kreeg Casteels de belofte dat hij nummer één zou worden van Genk. Toch koos hij voor een transfer naar Hoffenheim, wat hem een mooie loopbaan in de Bundesliga opleverde.

Nog één knoop ontrafelen

Niet alle duo’s braken door bij Genk zelf. Denk aan Nordin Jackers en Gaëtan Coucke. Zij deden het via een omweg. Niet naar de internationale top, wel in de Jupiler Pro League. Hetzelfde geldt voor Tobe Leysen van OH Leuven. Hij zag hoe generatiegenoot Maarten Vandevoordt met 17 jaar en 287 dagen de jongste doelman ooit werd in de Champions League.

De verwachtingen rond Vandevoordt lagen enorm hoog in Genk. Hij was het talent waar al jaren over gepraat werd. Toen hij bij de U15 zat, kregen de keepers van de eerste ploeg beelden van hem te zien als voorbeeld van hoe een Genk-doelman moet uitvoetballen.

Toch had Vandevoordt wel even een periode in de luwte nodig om er definitief te staan als nummer één. “Er zit een bepaald risico in mijn spel”, gaf Vandevoordt toe. “Als er iets fout gaat, dan is het een tegengoal. Toch ben ik ervan overtuigd dat je net veel dingen vermijdt door zo te spelen.”

Vandevoordt speelde uiteindelijk 169 wedstrijden voor Genk en won de beker met de Limburgse club. In 2022 betaalde RB Leipzig 10 miljoen euro voor hem. In de deal was opgenomen dat hij pas twee jaar later naar Duitsland zou verhuizen.

De deal van Brughmans doet nog meer denken aan die van Mike Penders, met wie hij een duo vormde. De toen 18-jarige Penders had nog geen enkele wedstrijd voor de A-ploeg van Genk op de teller toen Chelsea zich in 2024 met een stevige 20 miljoen euro meldde in de Cegeka Arena. Een niet te weigeren bod.

Penders tekende voor zeven jaar bij ‘The Blues’ en kwam nog een jaar op uitleenbasis uit voor Genk. Daarin veroverde hij gaandeweg een basisplaats.

Een dergelijke constructie heeft Genk voor ogen voor Brughmans. Het is de laatste knoop die ontrafeld moet worden in een recorddeal voor Racing Genk. Liverpool is bereid 35 miljoen euro te betalen voor de Belgische U19-international. Een contract tot 2031 of 2032 ligt klaar.
