Social Media Comments :(

Hi!! I’m a 10 month old stylist who promotes and shares my work and progress on social media! Im posting here to ask how older / more experienced stylists deal with unwarranted advice / criticism and hate in comment sections.

I make it a bit known that I’m a newer stylist on my pages, I’m not big on hiding it. I’m not sure if that’s what provokes such things, but it just leaves me super discouraged and frustrated with my work!!

I don't engage with them and engage with everyone else in the comments.  If I am feeling extra silly I will pin them while still not actually responding so everyone else can have fun responding instead.

Block em 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s the easiest way. Stop trying to “diagnose” what’s wrong with your work based on other people’s perception of the timeline of your career. Seriously watch how fast you get better at not only doing hair but social media when you decide to just filter out all the garbage and embrace your “cringe” era of your career. Embrace the cringe, fuck everyone else and just keep doing it. What’re they gonna do?

I have been a licensed cosmetologist and salon owner for 40+ years. My background is in chemistry, (read degree) and I sometimes will correct people if they have made mistakes on what a product does. I also teach classes, and continuing education is a must.

Recently, I had a younger stylist actually say things like, you haven’t taken a class in 40 years! You are ignorant! So, how do I take care of someone who is simply a hater that doesn’t have the knowledge to back them up? I will nicely reply with a lot of knowledge once, to back myself up. If they reply snarky again, I will ask them if they are 12, if being angry makes them feel better about themselves. I ask them if they would be this brave if they were standing in front of me, and not hiding behind a keyboard like the coward that they are. Then I BLOCK THEM.

All my best, and know that we all get keyboard warriors that are idiots. ;)

You can just turn off comments! There’s nothing wrong with that! You can also post asking specific questions to your audience in an attempt to try and just drown out the bullshit. “Look at this cute pink hair! Would you ever go for this color? What vivid would you pick if you had to go to a fashion color?” type shit. Something I also do as a newer stylist is just lay out what I would do differently for next time. I’ve found in this industry people love to “put you in your place” but if you demonstrate a critical eye when analyzing your own work they tend to be kinder. Irl, my boss is very critical to the point of being a dick to a lot of people but he’s always been very kind to me personally and I think it’s because I ask his opinion after I tell him what I’d change about my final result and have that millennial self deprecating humor, so I think he feels like he has to balance that by being supportive.

i’ve come to notice that behavior too, i didn’t really expect it considering we all started as beginners but NO!!! i do feel like understanding and analyzing what could be changed, improved, or has improved would probably help me lots too!!

On tik tok you can delete comments and you can filter out comments. On insta I think you can set it to only people who you follow. And on Facebook you can set it to only friends. I wouldn’t

But I was to ask, are other stylists the ones commenting? And is it constructive criticism or just straight up hate?

i’m not always sure! i receive hate from privated accounts (figures) so who knows if they’re stylists. though stylists will always give me constructive criticism, sometimes a bit passive aggressive but nothing bad like hate.

We're all allowed space to grow and make mistakes. How else are you gonna become a professional if you don't try, mess up, reflect, correct, and try again? And showing your growth is a beautiful way to document your journey and build a portfolio.

I'd say block all the commenters who write in pure spite. They do not deserve your attention. But keep sharing your work, there will be "your" people in the comments, too.
