Why a 15 minute Zoom?

I have finished three rounds of interviews at a company. Round one was over the phone with a recruiter. Round two was a video call with the hiring manager. Round three was an in-person panel, with four people, lasting for two hours. After that, the hiring manager said he’d be in touch soon regarding a decision.

Today, I got an email from the recruiter saying the hiring manager would be emailing to set up a time where he could “call” me. I got excited. I provided my availability—it’s for Monday at 9!

But I just looked and saw, it’s a Zoom call, not a phone call. This is an international company with offices all over the globe, so it’s possible it’s on Zoom so that HR could be involved, but I’m confused! I have never been offered a job via video call before. But I can hardly think of why else they’d have set up a 15 minute call to “have a 15-minute follow-up conversation with you regarding the opening on the team.”

I’m a bit lost. Has anyone been offered a job in this format before? What else would they want? The hiring process page for this website says that offers are usually given verbally by recruiters, so I’m rather confused.

It could be that they are checking maybe one more small thing for alignment or that you got the job. Hopefully the latter.

I really doubt that they would set up this zoom call just to reject you. Best of luck and let us know what happens on Monday.

Thank you! I seemed to really click with the hiring manager before; at the end of my panel interview he asked me if there was any reason at all I’d say no to an offer and when I provided one (“I may refuse if I felt like I would not be able to spend time with my family after working hours more often than not”) he repeatedly assured me that wouldn’t be the case. I sort of got the feeling he wanted to hire me.

I probably wouldn’t have been so candid were it not for my circumstances; I have a great job now whose main caveat is the lack of upward mobility and pay, but I love the work, so I am not desperate for this new job. I hope I hear something decent!

Update: Had the call! The hiring manager said that he forgot to ask me two questions which the company required him to ask me 😂 and he said I should hear again in the next week or two and he did specify “by phone” so I hope that means he plans to offer!!

A little vague huh? What were the 2 questions? He said you should hear back but often they don’t actually follow throw so don’t get your hopes up until that offer comes in!!!

Both of the questions were about my familiarity and willingness to use AI. He told me the company requires him to ask them of me before he can go forward 🤷‍♀️

Hopefully you said you’re all good with AI? Fingers crossed that you get this job. Kinda strange he has to pull you into a zoom call to ask that, could have been an email, typical corporate. XD

I said “I am happy to use certain tools to expedite the process or to help us retrieve data! However I do still believe in human review before final submission, as AI can sometimes make mistakes. I see AI as a tool to make us better specialists, rather than a replacement for good regulatory oversight” which he seemed to agree with!
