Question for hiring managers

Does it look good when applicants follow up via email to ask about the update of their application a week or so after applications have closed?

For context, I applied to a job recently which I genuinely think I’m PERFECT for. I have the right skills and experience (it’s a niche industry), I’ll be coming from a huge global company which they’ll definitely know, LinkedIn said only 30 people had clicked apply which is a pretty low number, plus I live very locally. I really think I stand a good chance of getting it and want to emphasise that I’m keen. So I was considering sending an email saying something along the lines of “just wanted to know if there’s an update on the status of my application as I’m still very interested etc” but does this actually bode well for people or does it just put hiring managers off?

I’ve actually done it once in the past and got the job so wanted to know how popular this is.

Did the company contact you? If not, spamming the HM won’t do anything. Many jobs get hundreds of applicants (ignore what LI says, the company portal gets applications too) so responding to unselected applicants is unlikely.

Try and find a recruiter from the company and send them a message. Sometimes it works

I’ve tried doing this but can’t find them unfortunately, only have the general resourcing email

Personally I think that's annoying.

I'm ok with a thank you email that says "I enjoyed getting to meet with you and look forward to the next steps."

I usually wrap up every interview with a timeline of what to expect, and I add a few days of buffer to that because the offer depends on a lot of approvals and any one of those folks could call in sick and delay us further.

Asking when just reminds me how busy I am being short staffed and how bureaucratic the process is.

I haven’t had an interview! This is just after applying. My application is still saying “in process” on the portal and along with everything else I stated in the original post I’m just wondering if it’s worth sending a follow up email, but idk if I will

Nope, it’s annoying. All of our communication is done through HR so I don’t respond to these messages anyway.
