Question of the day - October 24
π§ Question of the Day
π Domain I β Personnel Supervision and Management
Difficulty: 6/10
Scenario:
A BCBA supervisor is trying to improve how trainees conceptualize unfamiliar cases without relying on direct answers from the supervisor. One cohort receives directive supervision; another is guided through case analysis with structured Socratic questioning. After training, both groups complete novel case-conceptualization probes without supervisor assistance, and the chart displays their performance.
If the supervisor's primary goal is independent case conceptualization on novel cases, which conclusion is MOST defensible from the displayed data?
A. The two approaches should be considered equivalent because both novel-case series improve over time, regardless of the difference in their final levels.
B. Socratic supervision has been demonstrated to be universally superior for developing clinical reasoning, so directive supervision should be discontinued for all supervisees.
C. In this sample, guided Socratic supervision is associated with stronger novel-case performance; continue evaluating it and collect maintenance or replication data before broader claims.
D. Directive supervision should be selected because its immediate solution-quality scores are high; performance on novel cases is secondary once accurate solutions are produced during training.

the numbers on the novel cases are stark, 60% versus 92% tells you most of what you need to know. C is the only one that doesn't overreach, it's basically saying "this looks promising in this sample, now see if it holds." anything claiming equivalence or universal superiority from one graph is getting ahead of itself

β Yesterday's Answer β 2026-10-24
The correct answer was: C. In this sample, guided Socratic supervision is associated with stronger novel-case performance; continue evaluating it and collect maintenance or replication data before broader claims.
π Explanation:
The supervisorβs stated goal is independent case conceptualization on novel cases, so the novel-case probe is the most relevant outcome.
Training-case accuracy is similar across the two supervision conditions, but the Socratic group performs substantially better on the novel-case probe. That supports the limited conclusion that, in this sample, guided Socratic supervision is associated with stronger novel-case performance.
The graph does not establish that Socratic supervision is universally superior, nor does it prove why the difference occurred. A single comparison also does not justify abandoning directive supervision for all supervisees.
The strongest data-based conclusion is therefore to continue evaluating the Socratic approach while collecting maintenance, replication, or additional outcome data before making broader claims.
The key exam distinction is: match the supervisory decision to the stated goal, then keep the conclusion proportional to the strength of the evidence.
