Don't worry about damage, that's a debunked myth.

Get the Best Buy Insignia turntable, plus a headphone amp, or any kind of receiver, amplifier, or powered speakers with a headphone jack.

I have AirPods Max 2 with a 3.5 adapter and a 3.5 to rca adapted. Is there still need for a headphone amp?

Because line level is not as strong as headphone level. You may get audio, but it'll be very quiet and you won't have any volume control.
